Podcast: Play in new window
Let’s talk about sex baby, let’s talk about you and me! Does anyone remember that song? I know that’s a bit facetious of me, but the entire point of today’s podcast is to rid ourselves of the ill-placed shame associated with sex. For decades the Christian church has made talking about sex nearly impossible. It was most definitely a hush-hush conversation. While most of us knew that we needed to wait until we got married to do it, many of us missed out on important conversations about sex, and when we finally started talking, we realized that we probably should have started a lot earlier.
Purity culture, a subculture of evangelical Christian culture that emphasizes strict gender roles and norms, abstinence, and modesty, marked the 1980s – 2000s for many of us in our church experiences. Purity culture morphed into this list of rules, or dos and don’ts. Many of us are still dealing with the effects of purity culture being ingrained into us as young girls. While some of purity culture helped us to understand the importance of purity, the lists and rules also shaped the way we view sex and/or talk about it still. This podcast conversation isn’t just for women who are married or who are in intimate relationships. Every woman needs to hear this one.
Under the Christian umbrella, there aren’t many people brave enough to have the conversations, but Dr. Juli Slattery is one of those who is, and I’m so grateful. In my head, I think of her as “The Sex Lady”!. I had the pleasure of joining Dr. Slattery on her podcast some time ago and found her presence to be soothing and solid. Dr. Juli is a clinical psychologist, author, speaker, and the president/co-founder of Authentic Intimacy. She has written 12 books and just released a new book titled God, Sex, and Your Marriage.
She is the real deal and I am so excited for you to hear the hearty wisdom that Juli so graciously shares on this not-discussed-enough topic.
We need this kind of conversation y’all! It’s so important that Christian women are free to be real, upfront, and unapologetic about our bodies and the act of sex. Juli does a fantastic job at threading God’s word throughout our conversation regarding sex, purity culture, and our bodies. I believe this refreshing perspective will bring healing and understanding to so many women. Sex is a God ordained treasure so let’s do the work to break free from the guilt or shame that has been attached to it. My hope is that this conversation will not only encourage you but also remind you that you are not alone and you do not have to live with sexual shame.
