Podcast: Play in new window
Have you been asking God for overflow in your finances? What if He’s waiting on you to better steward the money you already have?
If it’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that sometimes, it’s not about having more money. Sometimes, it’s about growing up and realizing that most of the time, you already have everything you need.
Taking a look in the mirror can be hard, but many of us lack the discipline to live an abundant life. And just like a toddler needs repetition to learn a lesson, we often end up in debt and distress before we make the moves to get this money thing right. The good news? If we stop to pay attention to our lives, we won’t have to spend the rest of our lives learning the lesson. Eventually, we will mature to the point of managing our money well.
And much like a child who runs and hides after making a mistake, it’s so easy for us to try to hide from our overspending, but the truth is revealed in our bank account. The unnecessary trips to Target, the purchases piling up from Amazon, and the trips to the drive-through all tell a story.
If you’re ready for your money to tell a different story about who you are, then you have to shift your priorities, patterns, and practices.
- Be clear about your priorities – If you say you value your health, but you spend more at restaurants than in the produce section at the grocery store, then you aren’t being true to who you say you want to be.
- Look at your patterns – Which emotional triggers cause you to swipe your card or buy something online out of impulse?
- Implement new practices – It’s not enough to just create a budget; you must track your spending and check in with your money at least monthly, if not weekly.
When I look back over my life, several seasons required me to adjust my spending habits. One of the biggest ways I did that was by cutting my grocery bill. I got creative with recipes and started with what we had at home as a mother of young children. Even now with older children, I still prioritize meal planning for the sake of saving where money seems to go the most. So much so that I put together a Meal Planning Workshop to help you, too.
And there are other practical ways to get better at budgeting your money.
- Print out your bank statements from the last three months and take note of your spending categories.
- Use a Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets template to create a budget the old school way.
- Download budgeting software or an app like Quicken, EveryDollar, and Goodbudget (which uses a digital envelope system) to track your spending.
- Cut out subscriptions that no longer serve you.
- Replace impulse purchases with healthier ways to self-soothe, like nature walks and journaling.
God’s Word tells us to be faithful over little before we can be trusted with much. (Luke 16:10). If you’re ready to see the vision for your life come to pass, listen to this podcast episode to lock into the abundance that He has for you.
