When you’ve been entrusted with a message, a team, or an assignment, you know there are always highs and lows. One day you finish a presentation and feel like every word landed exactly where it needed to. You receive encouraging messages, opportunities seem to open, and momentum feels real. Then there are other days. You pour the same amount of prayer, preparation, and effort into your work, but the response is quieter. The engagement isn’t what you expected. You begin wondering if you’re making a difference at all.
If you’ve been there, you’re not alone.
But here’s what I’ve come to realize: real influence doesn’t come from chasing every high or fearing every low—it comes from showing up with faithfulness and steadiness over time.
The path forward in your calling isn’t about doing more, but about doing what matters—with consistency, integrity, and excellence.
Why Steadiness Matters
We often assume that great leadership and communication aren’t about being the loudest voice in the room. They’re about being the voice people can count on. When others lose focus or fade out, being steady, dependable, and faithful will help you earn trust and inspire action.
That’s why I encourage you to live by what I call the “also” principle. Do what’s expected and also bring your best. Not because an audience, a team, or a platform demands it, but because you’re ultimately serving God as your Source.
As my dad often reminded me: “If God is your source and everyone else is your resource, then you answer to Him.” That truth reshapes how we lead. When God is your source, you don’t have to measure your value by applause, promotions, followers, or opportunities. You simply remain faithful with what’s been placed in front of you, trusting Him with the outcome.
Four Ways to Put This Into Practice
The good news is steadiness isn’t abstract—it’s practical. When you build it into your daily habits, it shows up in the way you work, the way you serve, and the way others experience your leadership. Here are four ways to start putting it into practice:
1. Be excellent where you are.
It’s tempting to believe you’ll give your best once you have a bigger audience, a larger platform, or more responsibility. But excellence starts long before those opportunities arrive. So, prepare well, think carefully, and serve the people in front of you wholeheartedly.
Whether you’re speaking to ten people or a thousand, leading a meeting, teaching a Bible study, or encouraging a friend over coffee, steward today’s assignment with care. Faithfulness in the small things prepares you for greater responsibility later.
2. Be steady.
Growth rarely happens overnight. Sometimes leadership feels repetitive, or your work feels unnoticed. Keep showing up. Don’t disappear when progress feels slow. People are drawn to leaders who remain present – not just during exciting seasons, but during ordinary ones too. Influence grows through consistency, not occasional bursts of inspiration.
3. Operate with integrity.
Your character will carry your calling further than your talent ever can. Keep your word. Honor your commitments. Meet your deadlines. Tell the truth. Follow through on what you said you’d do. Every time you do, you’re building trust and trust is one of the most valuable gifts you can offer the people you lead.
4. Choose the “also.”
This is my favorite. Go beyond what’s required of you. Write a thoughtful follow-up email. Take a few additional minutes to make something clearer, kinder, or more helpful. These are small acts of intentionality that communicate, “You matter.” Over time, those small acts become part of the legacy you leave behind.
A Final Word
You don’t have to chase every opportunity or overextend yourself trying to be everywhere at once. Stay faithful to the assignment in front of you, and trust that God will open the right doors of influence in His timing.
He sees you. He knows your path. And His plans for you to grow are good.
