There’s something about the power of prayer and how it can shift every aspect of your life. Whether you’ve been praying for God to do a new thing or you’ve been interceding on someone else’s behalf, prayer is a practice that can truly change things.

On this Christian walk, there are so many messages about the importance of prayer and its transformative nature, but unfortunately, life has a way of increasing the distance between you and God. From the time you wake up, there are notifications on your phone and distractions in your home, keeping you from stopping to check in with the very One who woke you up in the first place. So how do you actually build a solid prayer life when life itself is getting in the way?

That’s where Heather Thompson Day comes in. She’s an author and a speaker with a history that bears witness to the power of prayer in her life. Her latest book, What If I’m Wrong?: Navigating the Waves of Fear and Failure, was written after a season of disappointment after disappointment. In it, she shares what God has taught her in her hardest moments.

Even when her circumstances were hard to push past, she’s been committed to documenting her requests to God in a prayer journal. Over time, she’s seen God’s hand on her life, which has yielded her several testimonies of God keeping His promises.

But it all began with Heather starting where she was, not where she wanted to be.

Whether it was praying for her students during her time as a professor to growing her Friday Night Light newsletter that now reaches 10,000 people, or her yielding to the Holy Spirit when she was prompted to give to someone else when she was the one in need, and still having her needs met in the process. You see, it wasn’t just her dedication to praying for an hour every day, or even the time spent reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelation several times over. It’s her faith plus her action that has led her to where she is today.

Maybe you’ve felt like God was far away during certain seasons of your life: when you couldn’t make ends meet, when your dreams didn’t align with your circumstances. But what about all of the times when things did work out for your good? Think back to the moments when things were falling apart in your life, but somehow, some way, everything worked out in the end. The moments when you prayed for God to show up and do the impossible and He came through just in the nick of time.

Heather calls these moments “anniversaries.” It’s not always apparent that God has answered a prayer unless it is written down. When He follows up on the prayer request you made, you’ll start to notice the patterns of God’s faithfulness and have something to hold onto when doubt fills your mind.

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, then you’ve heard me talk about the practice of writing things down. Things become clearer when we take the time to get out of our heads and open up to God. I know this episode will help you to hold on through your own disappointment and know that in the end, God can use it all for His glory and for your good.
