Podcast: Play in new window
Why is doing a new thing so hard?
We often want the “new” thing. We get excited about “new” things. We look forward to celebrating the “new” thing. But often we fail to move forward with the “new” thing. Why, you ask?
Because new things require work.
The real challenge with doing new things lies in the effort required to adopt new habits, the time needed to invest in new relationships, and the risk involved in pursuing new dreams.
Even when we are willing to make the effort, put in the time, or take the risk, there are other things that could throw us off track. Maybe we lack resources or support. Sometimes our insecurities get the best of us. Often comparison will keep us paying more attention to the other person’s journey instead of our own.
And then there is the dread some of us feel when we think about creating a plan (even though we understand that without a plan it’s harder to succeed).
All that said, it’s so important that you and I are willing to believe God is up to something new.
You may not always see what God sees. You may not always feel confident in moving forward. You still must trust God when He is leading you into new seasons in your life.
Always be willing to believe that God is up to something new.
And even better, know that God is inviting you to partner with Him. Pay attention to your life and the passion stirring within you. Notice the ideas that keep coming back to you over and over again. Look at the connections God is making in your life.
What new thing is stirring right in front of you?
If you don’t remember anything else, remember this…
God can pave new pathways in your life. He can re-work situations in your life to unfold in your favor. He can create new opportunities. He can make it so that your life intersects with new people.
Do you trust Him?
If so, what new thing will you do as evidence of your faith?

Thank so much for the words in your Do a New Thing podcast. In 2021 I told the Lord, I wanted to know what it was like to REALLY walk by faith instead of walking by sight. It has been quite a journey since then! I am contemplating another big step (some would say a leap) of faith into the unknown regarding what I want my future to be. My family thinks I need to do the safe thing. I am not a risk taker by nature, but the moment I looked into this opportunity, I knew this is it, I should do this. I was excited, interested, and the ideas were flowing…. My mind, however, as you stated, has been coming up with a zillion reasons why I shouldn’t take this step. I’ve been teetering back and forth because I want to be sure it is EXACTLY what the Lord wants me to do. Maybe all I need to do is JUMP! Thank you again for your testimony. I am sure many will be blessed and challenged.
