Podcast: Play in new window
Are you aware of the impact you have on others? I’m often caught off guard (in the best way possible) when someone tells me that something I said helped them in some way. Even if no one has told you yet, the wisdom that you have to share with others matters as well.
What I’ve discovered in my own life is that the true impact of my efforts isn’t always revealed until time has passed. I’m so glad I didn’t allow delayed gratification to keep me from investing in the lives of those around me.
I have experienced the importance of sharing and borrowing wisdom in multiple areas of my life. And you know what? I’m sure that you will go farther faster when you choose to truly seek wisdom, walk in wisdom, and share the wisdom you gain along the way.
Be willing to gain wisdom.
Unfortunately, you won’t always know what to do in every situation you’re placed in. In order to navigate the highs and lows of life, it’s crucial to seek out the wisdom you need. I wouldn’t be where I am right now if I wasn’t intentional about getting around wise people. Whether that was the mothers of the church, my own mother, or friends that were where I aspired to be. But first, I had to be willing to admit that I didn’t know it all. No one does. That’s why we are so much better together. As Scripture says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17)
I want you to really think about the questions you need answers to in this season of your life. When I was much younger, there was wisdom I acquired just by being in the room with other women, but it helped me to know which pieces of knowledge I could benefit from.
Commit to doing better.
As you gain wisdom, you will inevitably need to let go of anything holding you back. Sure, you may be comfortable in your current space, but you won’t grow until you are willing to do what it takes to show up for your life. As you become aware of how you need to change (or as wise people in your life tell you how you should), be willing to do what’s necessary now to reap your reward later.
Sometimes, this means listening when you want to speak. Sometimes, this means asking uncomfortable questions. Other times, this means seeking out wisdom even when no one is there to glean from. These days, wisdom can be found in abundance in books, podcasts, YouTube, and online communities like The Inner Circle. Let this be your sign to ask the questions, read the autobiographies, and take the classes. Never stop learning. Your future self will thank you for the effort you put in today.
Reach back and grant wisdom.
If you’ve lived a decent amount of time, then you know that there have been times when you had to find the strength to overcome. Maybe you believe the lie that you don’t have anything to offer others, but I’m here to challenge that thought. Whether you’re young or you’re old, there is someone who could benefit from your guidance.
You are always ahead of someone!
Stand in your power, knowing that everything you’ve been through has taught you lessons that you can now teach to someone else. And if nothing else, keep a record of the lessons learned as a reminder for yourself (journaling matters). When the time comes, you’ll have something to impart to someone following behind you.
The unique lived experience and insight that you bring to the table are just what someone else needs. If the Lord sends someone your way to mentor, walk in your confidence and share as He leads you to. Until then, be willing to soak up all the wisdom you can so that you can prepare for tomorrow, today.
