Are you pacing yourself as you set goals for 2024? I know that it can be tempting to race towards the finish line, but how you start now will determine where you end up this time next year.

It may seem counterintuitive to slow down when everyone around you is racing to the gym or stacking up best sellers at the bookstore. There’s nothing wrong with doing any of that, but I want you to stop for a minute and make sure you are running your own race.

Over the years, while I’ve run in ONE marathon, I’ve had the chance to run in more than a few half marathons. I understand the importance of not only staying in my lane but going at my own pace as well. There will be many people who line up at the start, but not everyone will cross the finish line.

I might have been slow, but I finished!

I want you to finish your race well, but you have to set your pace.

Setting your pace will require you to…

Know your rhythms.

Something that I’ve put into practice is looking at the rhythms of my life. How much stamina did I have in my last race? How much time did I spend looking to my left or my right? Did I spend too much time looking back?

The answers to these questions help me to course-correct for my current race. I know who I am and what I need because of past experience and what it has taught me. All of my past marathons have led me to where I am in my journey. The wisdom that I’ve acquired as a result is invaluable. The experience I have gained is important.

In order for you to thrive, you must learn when to slow down and when to pick up the pace.

Know your race.

Take a look at your life and the season that you’re in. If you have littles at home, this may be the season where you learn how to say no to anything competing for your time. Your focus is on supporting your family, and you have to keep boundaries around what is important. You may find that you are slowing down in this season (even though you’re chasing after your babies).

Maybe you are an empty nester with more free time on your calendar. You might find that you’re ready to rediscover the things you enjoy. In this season, you can pick up speed and engage in new activities. Whatever season you find yourself in, give yourself the grace to go at your own pace.

Know what your soul needs.

The only way to know if you’re overexerting yourself is to stop and check your pulse. Is there something you once loved doing that you’ve lost interest in? Are you having trouble keeping up with your life?

This may be your first time running this particular race. Know that others have run similar races before you who can provide wise counsel. Look around you. Are there women in your life that have been where you are now? They know what it takes to make it to the finish line. Don’t exhaust yourself trying to figure it all out alone.

My hope for you is that one day, you can look back from the finish line of your life and know that you ran your race well. And if you’ve gotten off track, you can start the race again. Tap into what your soul needs, run your race at the right pace, and put one foot in front of the other.

I’ll see you at the finish line.
