Podcast: Play in new window
In this episode, I have the fantastic opportunity to speak with The Minimal Mom, Dawn Madsen! Dawn, an expert in minimalist living and decluttering, has successfully maintained her home AND her peace by getting rid of over 80% of her belongings. (Whew!)
No matter what all of those Tupperware and Spacebag commercials tell you about the ease of storing goods in your home, it takes a lot to keep track of everything. Just think about it! Despite all the effort you put into keeping the house neat, it can take one dinner or late-night-last-minute school project to bring havoc to your home. We’ve all been there: the day-to-day home maintenance can make a battlefield out of what should be a living room. So how do we conquer the clutter?
8 years ago as a stay-at-home mother, Dawn started her minimalist journey after feeling needlessly anxious and stressed dealing with the clutter in her life. Taking on the challenge of restoring peace to her home, Dawn dove into the world of minimalist living, making an intentional effort to keep what was necessary and blogging her journey along the way.
The thing is, as Dawn shares, decluttering can be emotionally overwhelming. A good case of what-if-I-need-laterisms can bring any productivity to a halt. Add on top of that… a family who doesn’t buy into the idea or your fear of getting rid of things you need and decluttering can become unfruitful. Thankfully, Dawn offers three tips for dealing with it all:
Start small: When decluttering, rather than going about dealing with the entire room at one time over the course of several hours, it is much more efficient to spend about 15 minutes in one small space. This will save your energy and keep you motivated to do more later.
Diligently decide: Ask yourself these two questions as you’re deciding what stays and what goes:
- “Have I used this in the last year?”
- If not, then ask: “Will I be using it within the next year?”
- If it’s a no to both questions…well it’s time to let it go.
Invite in others: Whether you need to dissociate or ask your friends for help, allowing other people into your process helps to maintain your momentum and keep you accountable to your goals.
Having peace in your home doesn’t have to be a struggle, but it may take a struggle to get to the peace. Although exhausting, decluttering can give you the space to finally just breathe. Are you ready to make room for your exhale? Then join Dawn and I as we conquer clutter and restore peace in our homes!
