Motherhood is one of the most fulfilling yet challenging journeys a woman can embark on. It’s a twenty-four seven job that is full of constant changes, ups and downs, and endless to-do lists, yet, it comes with no handbook. While our motherly instincts sometimes kick in, many times we are out here just figuring it out as we go along. In addition, there are unrealistic expectations we are bombarded with on social media and a never-ending stream of parenting books. You can see why it’s easy to feel inadequate as a mother.

In this episode, my good friend, Alli Worthington, joins me to discuss her recent book, “Remaining You While Raising Them: The Secret Art of Confident Motherhood”. Alli had no intention of writing a book on motherhood, but after seeing all of the negative messages that mothers are faced with, she knew she had to write this book. Drawing from Biblical truth, mental health professionals, and tons of research on the things that matter long-term with your kids, as well as the lessons she has learned in her own motherhood journey, she provides moms with some practical tips for navigating motherhood with confidence and intentionality.

Alli is a wife, mother to 5 boys and 1 bonus daughter, entrepreneur, speaker, coach, and author… so she and I had a lot to talk about. Alli and I discuss ways to prioritize healthy self-care, ways to cultivate grit in our children, ways to maintain healthy independence, and so much more. If you need encouragement in your mothering, then this podcast is for you!

My hope is that this conversation gets you started thinking about YOU and what you need!

As mothers, we often put the needs of our children before our own, and although there is a level of sacrifice, surrender, and selflessness in motherhood, we tend to neglect our physical, emotional, spiritual, mental and relational health to the point of feeling burned out, drained and resentful. The truth is, taking care of yourself first enables you to show up better for your children and family. Regularly check in with yourself and ask, “What do I need right now?” Whether it’s ten minutes of meditation, a quick nap, a night out with friends, or a taco, begin the practice of prioritizing your own well-being without guilt.

Another important aspect of motherhood is maintaining a healthy sense of independence. It’s important to have an identity outside of motherhood, whether that’s pursuing hobbies, maintaining friendships, or pursuing career goals. This sense of independence not only benefits you but also sets a positive example for your children. You were a person before you were a mother, and you’re still a person now.” Embrace your identity, passions, and strengths apart from motherhood, and watch as a healthy sense of independence enriches your life and relationships.

Navigating motherhood with intentionality and confidence is no easy feat, but it’s certainly possible. As you listen to my conversation with Alli, it is my hope that you take the pressure off of yourself by letting go of mom guilt and begin to realize that by prioritizing your own well-being, cultivating grit in yourself and your children, addressing burnout and resentment, and maintaining a healthy sense of independence, you can find fulfillment and joy in the journey of motherhood.
