Podcast: Play in new window
What makes an adult? The beautiful (or maybe scary) thing about that question is that there are several different answers. For those who’ve lived long enough to know, from the moment you become an adult, this new season of life has a way of throwing anything and everything at you! Many young adults struggle with feelings of overwhelm and a lack of confidence in how to start building their lives.
For parents raising their children to become adults, it can be difficult to articulate exactly what your children need to know before they leave your care. Simply put, adulting is hard, but there are ways to make it much more manageable and fulfilling.
Whether or not you are an adolescent, teenager, young adult, or even a parent of one of the same, you can get prepared for this awesome season of life! I’ve come up with a few things children and young adults should know about moving into the era of greater personal and societal responsibility.
This episode is PURE GOLD!
Not only am I bringing my best ideas, but I crowd-sourced even more ideas with the help of the girls in the Inner Circle. The tips I share in this episode were born out of one of our morning exclusive and unedited Coffee with Chrystal live streams. We shared our best tips with each other and now we are sharing them with you!
In this episode, I break this amazing list of skills down into digestible categories. These categories include: personal care, managing the home, finances, relationships, and spirituality. While the list of possible training opportunities is a long and good one, here are some key things to remember:
For parents raising their kids to be adults, give your children, teens, and young adults the opportunity to learn! Whether you let them take care of the grocery shopping or help them set up an investment portfolio, allowing them to share in many of your everyday activities can become valuable lessons for your child if you include them or let them tag along.
You know more than you think!
You are probably a better teacher than you are giving yourself credit for!
And for those times when you don’t know or have solid experience, you have an opportunity to learn in tandem with your child! Take advantage of free online tools and tutorials to empower yourself and your child to take control of your lives. As you expose and teach your son or daughter through your own experience, you will also be teaching them to become a more independent and inquisitive person. You will give them the confidence to take charge of their body, mind, spirit, and relationships.
As for any young adults who are here to read these show notes or listen to this podcast, relax! Going through adulthood comes with a lot of discovery and that’s exciting! What may seem impossible to understand or overcome can often be tackled by taking advantage of help and incorporating patience. Ask questions and be prepared to wait for an answer! As you engage with the challenge of living your life well, you will build confidence, resiliency, and develop your own priorities which will prepare you to journey through adulthood – which is the rest of your life.
Adulting can seem hard, but parents… why let yourself or your child go in alone? Young person, you don’t have to navigate the changes of seasons by yourself! In this episode you will learn how to:
- Defuse the fear of adulthood
- Explore practical areas of development
- Prepare teens and young adults for responsibility
- Use accessible resources
Make mistakes, ask for help, and take it one day at a time. This episode is an amazing one! Stick with me on this one because it’s a bit of a firehose. I encourage you to listen in and take notes on this crash course on preparing for adulthood!
