Are you struggling to engage in relationships and conversations the way Jesus calls us to?

We all need community. Yet, relationships are hard and conversations can be even harder. Sometimes we associate our need for community with someone else’s journey. We decide we do not want the label or the box associated with a certain group to become part of our story. Or we decide it’s easier to simply have surface level, inauthentic engagements under the premise we are staying in our lane. However if we convince ourselves we don’t need or want community, we walk away from the very spaces we need to run towards.

When we choose not to live in community with others or have the uncomfortable conversations, we do ourselves a disservice. But when we accept ourselves, own our identity, and find peace in the place where we are in life, then we will find the community we need and the courage to have the uncomfortable conversations.

My guest today is no stranger to the journey of self-acceptance or hard conversations. Shanterra McBride is an author, motivational speaker, educator and coach. She is the founder of Marvelous University and in the midst of doing all the things was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. And I do mean all the things! Shanterra was diagnosed while working on her latest book, Courageous Discomfort.  A book that, despite her diagnosis, she finished.

Shanterra acknowledges that finding the right community of people to live out her MS diagnosis with was life-saving for her. And she made the decision that how Jesus loves, protects and covers her is how she wants to love, protect and cover others. She encourages others to live life to the fullest by being willing to:

  • Ask and answer the hard questions
  • Refuse to shame and condemn others
  • Love others the way Jesus loves us
  • Accept where God has planted you

Listen in as we discuss her latest book, which she co-authored with her good friend Rosalind Wiseman. It serves as a blueprint for living authentically in the midst of cultural unrest. And it asks and answers some of the  uncomfortable questions around race and racism in the context of a friendship between two women from different ethnicities.

It is the work of our lives to operate in the skin we are in and be as healthy as possible in the environments we inhabit. When you are free you can live in authentic relationships and openly communicate without shaming others for where they are in life, knowledge and wisdom.

So my question to you is simple…

Are you ready to live in community and have hard conversations by embracing courageous discomfort?
