How does your home make you feel? When you come home after a long day, do you feel free to rest, or does stress meet you at the door?

As a wife and mom, I know what it’s like to feel completely overwhelmed by the dishes piled up in the sink or loads of laundry that never seem to go away. And there have been seasons in my life when church commitments, family gatherings, and homeschool lessons made it hard for me to manage it all. But time often brings wisdom, and I’ve learned that if I really want a calm home, then I have to plan for it.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by chaos in your home, I want you to know that peace is possible.

A peaceful home doesn’t happen by accident. A peaceful home requires intention to keep the good in and the not-so-good out.

The good news is that you have everything you need to create a home environment that serves you and your family. Here are some practical tips for setting a positive tone for your home.

Identify what causes you stress

In order to know what needs to change in your home, you have to look at your pain points. Are you always struggling to find your keys in the morning? Do you find it hard to locate important documents when you need them? Are you the only one in your family completing the long list of chores every week?

Take some time to observe your frustrations and write them down. This is the first step in shifting from chaos to calm.

Choose peace over perfection

You don’t have to declutter your entire house in one week. And you don’t have to spend money that you don’t have on new decor and furniture. Instead, focus on building a peaceful home one new habit at a time. After all, you want the changes you make to be long-lasting and sustainable. That’s where rhythms come in.

Your rhythms could look like:

  • Starting each day with worship music and prayer
  • Cleaning the main areas of your home after dinner for 15 minutes
  • Loading the dishwasher every evening
  • Sorting through mail on Saturday mornings

I would encourage you to build in your rhythms with consideration of the season you’re in. If you have small children and your quiet time is nonexistent, you could build in a rhythm of listening to the Bible app while making breakfast. If you work non-traditional hours, you may need to enlist the help of other family members to load the dishwasher at night. Do what you need to do to establish a flow of order and responsibility in your home.

Set up sustainable systems

As you incorporate rhythms into your daily routine, you will find that systems are needed to keep things moving. While rhythms help you flow through your home with ease, systems help you manage your important home tasks.

Systems in the home often look like:

  • Having a filing system for important documents
  • Meal planning using an app like my favorite, Plan to Eat
  • Decluttering your closets each quarter with a box for donations
  • Planning for the week ahead with The Full Circle Planner
  • Creating an age-appropriate chore chart for your little ones

As you create rhythms and systems for your home, ask God to guide you in doing what’s necessary to restore order in your space.

Here’s a Scripture to hold on to: “She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” – Proverbs 31:27

You are the manager of your home, and you have the power to transform it into a sanctuary. I am convinced that with intentional planning and purposeful communication, you can create a home that brings you joy.
