What does it really cost to say yes to God? That’s the question Brenda Palmer has been living her way into, and we unpacked it in this conversation.

Brenda is a communicator, preacher, and first-time author whose new book, The Journey of Yes: The Everyday Adventure of Radical Obedience, traces the beautiful and often painful path of following God when the road is unclear. Our conversation was a candid look behind the curtain of ministry, calling, and personal transformation.

Here are three powerful takeaways from our conversation:

  1. Obedience Isn’t About The Outcome

Brenda was transparent about the tension of writing a book on obedience while wrestling with her own doubts about the path God had her on. She admitted that while she was obeying God, she didn’t always enjoy the process and often questioned the cost. Yet even through the discomfort, she discovered that obedience wasn’t about what she might gain, but about the intimacy she found with God along the way.

“Obedience to God is not about what you get on the other side of it, but the God you meet through it.”

This reframes the way we approach obedience. Instead of treating it as a means to an end, we begin to see it as an invitation to deepen our relationship. Brenda’s story reminds us that God doesn’t promise ease, but He does promise His presence.

  1. God Can Trust You with the Platform When You Stop Chasing It

Brenda didn’t seek out ministry, visibility, or influence. Each open door – from her first sermon to her viral messages – came after a quiet yes. She wasn’t chasing a stage; she was chasing God. And in doing so, He entrusted her with more than she imagined, but also required more trust than she thought she had.

Brenda cautioned against idolizing platform or visibility, especially for those who equate impact with influence. She reminded us that serving faithfully in our local churches – teaching a small Bible study, showing up for our communities – matters just as much.

“Ask the Lord to kill any ambition that’s not from Him. Want to be with Him more than you want to be seen by others.”

This is a vital reminder: when our desire for God outweighs our desire for recognition, He can trust us with more because He knows we’ll give it back to Him.

  1. Let the Fruit of Your Yes Speak for You

One of the most moving parts of Brenda’s story was her honesty about family tension. As a pastor’s kid, she expected support when she left her job to follow God’s call. What she got instead was concern, questions, and misunderstanding. It wasn’t until her family saw God’s provision and faithfulness unfold that they could fully support her.

“Sometimes you have to let the fruit of your yes speak louder than your explanation.”

Whether your obedience is questioned by family, friends, or even your own inner critic, Brenda reminds us how important it is not to waste energy explaining what God has told you to do. Let your life bear witness. In time, the fruit will testify on your behalf.

Brenda Palmer’s story is a reminder that saying yes to God won’t always make sense, but it will always lead to growth. If you’re navigating a season of uncertainty, wrestling with obedience, or simply longing to trust God more deeply, her journey offers encouragement, perspective, and hope.

The Journey of Yes releases June 24, 2025, and it’s a must-read for anyone who wants to follow God with courage, even when the path is unclear.
