Are you terrified of making the wrong decisions? When choosing whether to walk into a new space or out of your current one, feelings of uncertainty can convince you that you’re better off not making a decision at all.

Many of us are tasked with making choices at every turn. The fatigue that comes as a result can cause us to run out of steam and begin to shut down emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Sure enough, when a major decision presents itself, we completely fall apart.

But you don’t have it all figured out to move forward in your life. You can choose to do the next right thing instead.

I chatted with my friend Emily P. Freeman to discuss her New York Times bestseller, How to Walk Into a Room. Her fresh perspective on decision making left me feeling at peace about my present and hopeful for my future. I am certain that this conversation will be a comfort to you as well.

During our chat, Emily shared her experience with making difficult decisions and:

  • having the courage to walk away
  • trusting God with the next right thing
  • giving yourself the closure you need

You may be ready to walk into a new room simply because you’re tired of the one you’re currently in. But it’s important that your readiness to move on lines up with God’s timing.

Emily shared a four-part framework using the acronym P-R-A-Y, for hearing from God as you make decisions in your life:

Point and call – How can you pay attention to what is true about your life right now? Take notice of what is happening in the present moment.

Remember your path – Instead of looking to the future, reflect on how God has been faithful in the past and how He guided you in the right direction.

Acknowledge presence – There is power in knowing that God is with you in your decision-making. You don’t have to walk through this process alone. Recognize God’s presence, the presence of others, and your own presence in your life.

Yield to the arrows – Ask yourself, “What direction am I being pointed in right now?” You can concentrate on your current task at hand, even when you can’t see the full picture.

If anxious thoughts begin to take over, I encourage you to slow down and get in tune with yourself and God. Implement the rhythms that bring you back to yourself. Journaling my thoughts, walking outside in the morning, and spending time in God’s Word always put my mind on Him and his faithfulness throughout my life. Tap into the rhythms that create calm so that things will become more clear for you.

Know that if God guided you through the current season, He will surely guide you through the next one.

Each decision you make is an opportunity to believe in your ability to hear from God. You’ll learn to trust yourself more as you move into new spaces with confidence and clarity.
