I wonder how many people would say they  just happened to “stumble” upon their purpose.

Could you say that?

Do you even think it’s possible someone could aim to discover how God desires for them to contribute in the world, and then one day, their purpose simply appears?

Here’s the thing. I don’t think life is about your purpose.

I believe life is about the path that gets you there.

And what I know to be true is that if you will follow God’s lead as you look and listen to the story your life tells, you will see that God has been leading you to purpose all along.

Some people I know would never have guessed that what we are now doing is what God had planned for us all along. Other people I know had a sense and may have seen it coming early on. No matter how we move through our time on earth and navigate our desires and experiences, God is faithful to utilize the gifts we’ve been given for His glory.

And when He does, in His timing it all makes sense.

My guest for this episode of the podcast  today is someone who has done the hard but necessary work of listening to her life so that she may better understand and traverse many of her experiences as a black woman. As a writer, speaker, activist, and author of two books, The Anti-Racism Journal: Questions and Practices to Move Beyond Performative Allyship, and her most recent book, Remember Me Now: A Journey Back to Myself and a Love Letter to Black Women, it came as no surprise that her life’s work would involve moving things towards change and helping black women to rediscover their identities.

The often uncomfortable topic of race is one that Faitth Brooks has known and engaged with most of her life. Living in her skin as a woman of color has shaped and challenged her but has also, in the best way, created a pathway for her to help many women do the same. Faitth delights in supporting black women in their personal journey to understand race as they live out their faith.

The tension of living life as a woman of color touches a variety of topics from from how you feel about your hair on any given day to the freedom felt or not felt to show up authentically in the world. Shared experiences for black women don’t equate to shared takeaways. This is why it’s so important to continue having the conversations surrounding race! Our commitment to the dialogue challenges us to share our perspectives even if we don’t share the same opinion.

In sharing we learn to listen to each other’s life experiences.

What would happen in your life if your love for people moved you towards listening? What if listening lead you toward positive changes in you, in your existing relationships, or in our culture? What if listening helped you to connect the love God has for people with your ability to love others well.

There are many voices out there, and we need all of them, but as you will soon discover, Faitth Brook’s voice is necessary. What she says, how she says it,  and her commitment to listen to others adds so much to the conversation on faith and race.
