Sometimes life is simply chaotic.

It’s inevitable. The moment you begin to think you have a good handle on life, you realize… you don’t! Or maybe you’ve known all along. One thing leads to another, and suddenly it becomes crystal clear that your whole situation has somehow gotten out of control; a trickle effect of events – chaos – decides to show up and make an unwanted appearance in your life.

This is how it sometimes begins…

You rush out of your home, and because you are carrying too much, you drop your phone. The screen cracks terribly. Then you get in the car and realize your engine light is on – even though you just got it out of the shop last week. Later the same day, you receive an email that reminds you that you’ve missed an important deadline. To top it all off, you get a phone call informing you that someone near and dear to you has fallen ill…

And this happens ALL IN THE SAME DAY!

Or maybe like me… you back out of your driveway only to ram the back end of your car into the front end of your husband’s car.

Yes… this really happened to me recently.

If you are like me, you might find that you brace yourself for occasional collisions. Yet, despite your best attempts at staying abreast of every little detail in your life, you can’t avoid this reality – some situations are just outside of your control.

But what happens when you are cause for chaos?

Maybe you become easily distracted. Or maybe you don’t create and honor safeguards on your time. It could be that you fail to prioritize what’s most important to you and instead prioritize the urgent needs of everyone else in your life.

If any of this rings true for you, then I know you don’t want to keep experiencing chaos or reacting to chaos in unproductive ways. But how can you move forward?

Do what you can to avoid the avoidable chaos. Whether it’s planning ahead or seeking counsel, it is possible to avoid collisions in your life. What guardrails do you need to establish to keep you headed in the right direction? Consider how often you engage what you consider most important to you and use that to keep a pulse on how you live your life.

Slow down so you are better able to see what’s ahead of you. Moving ahead at full speed is often the cause of many of the collisions we experience. The daily grind has the ability to cause us to miss pivotal moments that shape the core of who we are and what we believe. Gain perspective by creating space for what matters most!

Learn from your mistakes. You can learn the easy way – by observing how others have overcome the collisions in their life. Or, you can learn the hard way – by persevering through your own collisions. The choice is yours! However you choose to learn, be sure you learn! And when you do, release yourself from the burden of the past by moving forward and continuing your journey.

Sometimes, life can feel a bit like a wreck.

Bad things can happen and hard situations will come. None of us are exempt from the collisions that come our way. However, we can accept the invitation to engage life head-on and prevent messes of our own.

You can have the wreck and choose not to let the wreck have you!
