Podcast: Play in new window
How often do you talk to God about your finances? I know how easy it is to try to navigate the stress and strain of money problems on your own, but things become so much clearer when you partner with the One who provides all of your needs.
I know that this way of thinking is not the norm. In fact, according to an article by CNBC, 77% of Americans reportedly feel anxious about their finances. The article also notes that financial stress negatively impacts relationships. So many people are struggling with their finances, and yet, there is still hope for your financial future.
And you don’t have to find your way out on your own. Here are my three guiding principles for finding peace in the midst of financial pressure.
Invite God Into Your Finances
Money can be a taboo subject. It’s like you know you need help, but it seems safer to suffer in silence. You may even hide the truth of your finances from yourself by avoiding billing statements and bank account balances. But the thing is, you will have to deal with the consequences of money mishaps sooner or later. And, God knows what you’re dealing with anyway. Include Him in the equation. Before you sit down to take a real look at your money, pray over your situation. Spend time in God’s Word and ask Him to transform your mindset from lack to abundance. It may seem small, but deciding to trust God with your finances is the first step in walking towards financial freedom.
Set Goals for Your Financial Future
Even if you’re drowning in debt, there is always room to dream. After all, it’s often at your lowest point that your eyes are open to the opportunities right in front of you. So set your goals. Write the vision, make it plain. (Habakkuk 2:2) How do you want your life to look in six months? One year? Five years? What is God calling you to do with the blessings He’s given you? How can you structure your budget in a way that keeps your priorities in check? As you walk through these questions, remember there is nothing too hard for God. You just keep making your requests known to Him through prayer. Use what you have in your hands now and know that even a little adds up to a lot over time.
Build healthy money habits
Financial stress can become a burden that just won’t let up. When your income and your expenses fail to line up, discouragement can quickly set in and threaten to keep you in hiding. But you have to know that your story is not over.
My background in accounting and life experience has taught me that you can take control of your finances in a healthy way.
- Set reminders for weekly or monthly budget meetings
- Consult trusted family and friends for accountability
- Search online for a certified financial advisor
- Develop financial literacy through books, courses, and podcasts
Over time, you’ll notice a shift in your money mindset. As you get on track with your money, keep your heart open for ways to pour into others. Give life to the saying, “you’re blessed to be a blessing.” And remember, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over…” (Luke 6:38)
