Podcast: Play in new window
Do you feel like you’ve drifted away from your goals? Maybe you feel like time has come and gone, and you’re still in the same place you were years ago.
If you’ve found yourself veering off track and losing focus, you’re not alone. At one point or another, drift happens to most people. And it’s a gradual process.
Sometimes, drift happens when you are in a hurried season of life. If you’re just trying to get through each day, there is little room to exceed any expectations you set for yourself. Sometimes, drift happens when you’re moving from one thing to the next, just trying to keep up with whatever has your attention at the moment.
Just like the title of my book, “She’s Still There,” the girl who believed she could accomplish all of her aspirations is still there inside of you. You simply need the tools to help guide you back to the path you’re supposed to be on. Here are a few tools to keep in your toolkit for the moments when you find yourself on the side of the road of life.
Make space to plan – As you plan out your goals, prepare ahead of time for the moments when you won’t feel motivated to keep going. I often get ahead of drifts in my life by setting a date with myself, God, a pen, and one of my favorite notebooks. I take the time to check in with myself and figure out what the next steps are needed to reach my goals.
Make room for accountability – Let me tell you, there are some things I do without needing any encouragement at all, but then there are other things that I need a little push to get going. That’s where my circle comes in. Some of my people are there to cheer me on when I decide to run a marathon. Some of my circle is there to keep it real with me as I navigate relationships with loved ones. There are people in my life that I can turn to for specific things, and I want that for you, too. If you feel like you’ve tried and you just can’t find community, my Inner Circle community may be the place for you to thrive. And keep your eyes open. You may find your people in the environments where you are pursuing your goals.
Make disruptions part of your routine – When you feel like things are not working out for you, that’s the perfect time to introduce something new into your habits. If you’ve tried and tried to spend quiet time with God in the morning, but you can’t seem to break away from your family long enough to do so, try praying for five minutes on your lunch break or reading a devotional at night. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, but sometimes you have to wake yourself up by trying something different, especially when it feels like you’ve done all you can.
I know that life is going to life sometimes. It may even feel like all of your efforts are in vain. But my friend, you’re never too far gone to get back on track.
Never give up on you.
