Podcast: Play in new window
Do you ever feel like life is one big to-do list that never seems to get shorter? Have you been searching for the perfect planner, the ultimate system, or that one life hack that will finally help you “do it all” and “do it right?”
We live in a world that celebrates optimization and achievement, and so many of us, myself included, have bought into the culture of more: more goals, hustle, and results. We are bombarded with messages suggesting that if we aren’t maximizing every opportunity or reverse engineering our ideal future lives from today, we are falling short.
As someone passionate about living a life filled with intention, I know what it’s like to get caught in the endless cycle of productivity and perfectionism, trying to squeeze more into each day.
But what if there’s a better way to live intentionally without the stress of doing it all?
In this episode, I reconnect with Kendra Adachi, a two-time New York Times bestselling author and the brilliant mind behind The Lazy Genius Collective. She joins me in The Sister Circle to discuss her new book, The PLAN: Manage Your Time Like a Lazy Genius.
The PLAN expands on her previous work in The Lazy Genius Way. In The PLAN, Kendra introduces new strategies for time management that are rooted in compassion and practicality. Our conversation left me inspired and intrigued as we explored a different framework for approach planning, time management, and life itself.
Kendra’s wisdom is rooted in the idea that we need to embrace who we are, where we are, and stop chasing the idealized version of our lives. Her mantra is, “Be a genius about the things that matter and lazy about the things that don’t.” That doesn’t mean that we don’t dream big or set goals; it just means that those goals don’t define us. We don’t live only for some future version of ourselves.
We live today, and we live fully.
In the book, Kendra shares a four-part framework using the acronym P-L-A-N to help you as you go about planning in your current season.
Prepare —You absolutely must prepare to set yourself up for success, but the idea here is to prepare after you have identified the season you are in and the things that truly matter right now.
Live – What matters right now in your season, and what do you need to prioritize? Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.” It’s okay not to do it all. Life has seasons, and we don’t need to do everything simultaneously. When you focus on what needs to be done today and honor the season that you are in, you naturally begin to filter out what’s urgent from what can wait.
Adjust – There’s a beautiful wisdom in allowing yourself to change based on the current season you are in. If you’re in a season of high demand — whether you’re working long hours, raising young children, going through a major life transition, or caring for your aging parents — give yourself permission to adjust your expectations.
Notice – Paying attention to what’s working — and what isn’t — based on your current season of life is crucial. Some days, you’ll need an elaborate system; other days, you’ll need a sticky note with just one or two tasks. And that’s okay! Life shifts constantly, and so should the way we handle our tasks.
Life can be messy. Plans shift, and some days feels like everything’s out of control. But that’s okay. We don’t need to be perfect, we just need to be present.
So take a deep breath, my friend.
Let go of the need to do it all. Honor the season that you are in, start small, and know that you are enough. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is to live with purpose. Whether it’s finding joy in a simple routine or dedicating time to a passion project, spending time with your family, or taking a walk, trust that your journey is unfolding exactly as it should.
You’ve got this — one day, one small win at a time.
