Podcast: Play in new window
Ever wonder why Circadian rhythms matter or why routines have a significant impact on us? Simple, God is a God of order. Living a life of pattern and rhythm is our way of coming into agreement with Him and His creation.
Over several decades, I have learned a lack of routine can result in chaos; in turn, healthy rhythms have a positive impact on my life. It has taken me some time to recognize these patterns. Honestly, I don’t always have them down perfectly, but I’ve found some helpful ways to improve the day-to-day, and I’m so excited to share them with you!
You might be one of those people that says,
“Starting my day by rolling out of bed to jump on social media and ending it by watching whatever I feel like has worked for me thus far, and I’m getting by just fine.”
If that’s you, no judgment!
But I’d like to challenge you as I continue to challenge myself. We can reform the way we think about how we start and finish our days. We can pay attention to how these processes have a profound impact on our lives.
We are capable of living at a higher standard.
We don’t have to settle for “getting by” or being “just fine.” While God gave us the gift of life, He also holds us to a high standard of living life abundantly. Choosing to live life at this level may not always feel easy, but it is incredibly worth it. By living with intentional formation of good rhythms in our lives, we cultivate a peaceful, life-giving, and helpful environment for ourselves and those we love.
While I don’t always do things perfectly, here are some things that I’ve learned that I pray are helpful to you in your journey of cultivating rhythm and routine.
Start your day spiritually – Starting my day off slowly and with routine benefits my life. I try to start my day off every day around the same time in accordance with my circadian rhythm. I make it a point to spend quality time with God and let him fill my thoughts. I like to think of it as “Coffee with Jesus.”
Start your day physically – Once I’ve allowed myself to connect with Him, I move my body. Getting my blood pumping now only helps my mind and body to feel ready for the day; it also gives me a shot of the feel-good endorphins. Once I’ve done this and eaten a little fiber to jump-start my system, I feel empowered to take on my day.
Start your day soulfully – Engaging all my senses as I prepare for and end my day helps me to engage my emotional and mental self. I typically turn on a fav Spotify playlist or Pandora channel. My diffuser is in my kitchen and stays plugged in so that I can add a few drops of my favorite essential oils and create a spa-like atmosphere in the heart of my home.
End the day well – In the evening, my husband and I make a point to “shut down” the house. We do our best to straighten the house, tidy the kitchen, shut down the lights and electronics, change the temp as desired, and wind down.
Do we do all of this perfectly? Nope!
But intentionality goes a long way!
Think of your mornings and evenings as pieces of bread in a sandwich to successfully contain all that your life is designed to hold. Without sturdy and dependable bread, the sandwich would be challenging to hold and enjoy. In the same way, without firm and consistent morning and evening routines, it’s difficult to feel a sense of control over your life –much less appreciate it.
I hope the tips I’ve provided in this post and in the podcast help you form rhythms and routines that will serve to set you up for success.
Will you do it perfectly? Probably not. But that’s okay!
Choose to start. Give yourself grace. And watch the intentional effort you pour into your life pay dividends.
