Podcast: Play in new window
When I reflect on my life, do you know what stands out? All of the small things I’ve done that led me to the big things God had in store for me.
I can trace this back to many experiences in my life.
I ran track in high school. While I loved the track meets, I hated practices. I mean… who loves practices anyway? And while I would have much preferred being selected as a sprinter, my coach saw fit to make me a longer-distance runner. Instead of regularly asking me to run 100 or 200-meter races, she more often asked me to run 400 and 800-meter distances.
When I first started running those races, they were tough to complete. I would start the race off strong then struggle to get to the finish line. I can remember more than once contemplating quitting in the middle of the race and walking off the track completely. Even though I intended to finish, as my legs became tired and my motivation waned, I struggled to make it to the end of the race.
Enter practice.
Although I didn’t necessarily enjoy practice or my coach’s feedback, I soon realized that the small decision to show up for practice every day and follow directions had a payoff.
My endurance grew.
The small things I did behind the scenes in my everyday life made all the difference when I showed up to run the race.
Maybe you feel like you’re in the middle of your own race.
Let me share how considering the small things will help you finish strong in your life.
Focus on what you can change
When you lean into what God has given you to do and focus on your strengths, you’ll be surprised how much your situation can change for the better.
I know it’s tempting to zero in on the things that aren’t working in your life. So, when you feel like you’re getting off course, shift back to positive thoughts and focus on what is within your control. What adjustments can you make to move the needle forward in your life?
Small changes today lead to major directional shifts in your life over time.
Build on what works for you
A great place to start when making small changes is right where you are! Spend one more hour a week listening to a podcast. Get up 30 minutes earlier to spend time with God. Add one more healthy meal to your meal plan for the week.
You don’t have to become whole new person in the next few minutes. Look at your current life and build on what you already know about who you are and the way you engage in the rhythms of your life.
Even if you make a simple addition to your current schedule as a small improvement, you are deciding to do something! Keep working to improve in the areas of your life in which you feel convicted to do so. The progress you make will take you further than perfection ever could.
Spend your time wisely
Social media can be a time-waster for many people these days, but so can anything that threatens to take us off course. I want to encourage you to look at some of the things that unintentionally pull you away from moving in the right direction. Remember that as you pick up good habits, you will inevitably need to let some old habits go.
Time is a limited resource, and you can choose how you spend it. Be intentional with your thoughts, your habits, and your relationships.
Change the trajectory of your story
Throughout my life, I’ve witnessed the impact of doing small things well. I watched my parents start our church 48 years ago with ten dedicated members and a solid Biblical foundation. I’ve seen firsthand the power of words spoken over my children as they’ve gotten older. And I’ve been blessed to facilitate a community of women through one blog post, one podcast episode, and one teaching at a time.
These seemingly small efforts over time have led to a lasting legacy for my family. I’ve seen the decisions of my grandparents have an impact over generations. But the only way things continue for generations to come is if each individual in our family continues to make the next right small decision that leads to legacy.
The same can be true for you. When you commit to doing the small things well and consistently, you’ll pick up the momentum you need to transform your current situation. But more importantly, you will become the person you were meant to be.
