Faith is sufficient.
Sure, it doesn’t come with an instruction guide, nor a clear answer to every question, but faith is sufficient. Despite what it may seem, even the most experienced elders in the church struggle with this truth. Faith is a practice in duality, and when we step into it, our lives become a public duet after being a private solo for so long. And right when it seems we’ve found our tune, we’re asked to bring others to Christ…so how do we remain steadfast in singing His praises to the most spiritually hard of hearing?
I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with writer, speaker, and mentor Dr. Alicia Britt Chole about growing in and leading with faith. Growing up as an ardent atheist, Dr. Alicia was highly motivated by a pragmatic knowledge absent of God. After seeing Christ work through others and experiencing the undeniable presence of God herself, however, faith became a sufficient answer for all of her unbelief and a motivation in her discipleship journey.
If nothing else, Dr. Alicia makes it clear to us that faith is not just a feeling–it is a muscle, and just like a muscle, faith requires constant training to grow its strength. By intentionally placing God into the smallest parts of our lives, we apply gentle pressure ourselves into living with God pluralistically and appreciating Him in the day-to-day.
“Pluralistically”…that’s a million-dollar word! But what does it mean? Living pluralistically entails living your life conscious of Christ in you; from the way you think, behave, and act, you are aware that you are never doing anything alone. Living pluralistically is actively accepting God’s presence, rather than attempting to operate in His absence.
So we invite God in, but how do we convince others to do the same? Dr. Alicia offers a clear task: show people that God loves them and that they are capable of being loved. For many people outside of Christ, it is easy to confuse emotion for devotion–emoting the presence of God is much different from devoting yourself to the presence of God. People can get lost in trying to feel God’s presence like others do, but God isn’t asking for replicated relationships. He wants a personal relationship with you – He loves seeing the attempts, and it pleases Him to see your effort to get close to Him.
Your spiritual duet does not have to be long, perfect, or complete, but it must be with Christ. As you find your next note, those you lead will find their first. So, are you ready for your duet? Join Dr. Alicia and I as we take a deep dive into living plurally and bringing others to Christ!
