Podcast: Play in new window
To adult, or not to adult? That is the question that so many young adults struggle with. Understanding the complexities of adulthood is not a one-track solution, but rather requires a good and applicable foundation of wisdom, skill, and faith. Many ill-equipped young adults find themselves drowning in the struggles of identity and responsibility even when the lifeboat is right next to them.
Adulthood is an inevitable part of your life, and because of this, it is your responsibility to take charge of it. With the help of my sisters in the Inner Circle, I’ve taken their wealth of knowledge and aggregated this good stuff into five distinct categories to help you grow!
Your person: You are made up of your mind, body, and spirit. Your body is your vehicle, so while you’re young, take care of it! Take the initiative to nurture all of you – you need proper nutrition and maintenance physically, mentally, and spiritually. When you prioritize the full spectrum of the healthiest version of you, your body, mind, and soul will return the favor and carry you well throughout your life.
Your pockets: One of the main ways to take control of your life is through your finances. Budgets like the 20/30/50 Rule give you practical tools that can set you up for healthy habits. Learning to watch and control your spending is the first step. Using these tools in tandem with learning to invest, being disciplined to put money aside for retirement, and understanding credit can save you from singing the blues in your 40s, 50s, and beyond.
Your people: Community is major in adulthood, and when you invest in your people, it pays dividends in your life. Simply put, people matter. Be kind. Be around people that feed your life, and build a community through service. Your efforts will yield support when you later find yourself struggling and need some friends.
Your partner: We are all hungry to have our person, but when that person does things to challenge your boundaries, they are not the person for you. Remember that you are deserving of positivity, care, and goodness and that you have the authority to ensure that. Be around people who want you to be the person you want to be. If they really love you, they will respect you.
Your purpose: You have to be okay with not knowing. That sounds so much easier said than done, but a lot of adulthood is realizing where your faith is weak and choosing to grow it. Be connected to God–listen as He guides you. In the meantime, take advantage of your time and protect it well. Get a calendar, plan your week, and squeeze every opportunity you can out of every second. Every season of your life will yield fruit if you let it and if you look for it.
When that is all said and done, one question remains…who are you? As we age, we find that who we were in our youth is not sustainable in the same way in adulthood. It’s a tangible shift. Despite this, there is a Father who knows you and in His plans for your good will reveal to you the answer with time. As for now, know that you are exactly who you need to be in this moment. Let your faith flourish where your information fails. You are okay.

Hi! I really loved this episode. I will be 24 years old in a few weeks and adulthood has been a huge experience. I’m at the place where I want to grow in intentionality. I would love to hear more about intentionality for young adults! 🙂
