So many women find themselves completely caught off guard by menopause. We prepare for different seasons of life – marriage, motherhood, career changes – but this transition often arrives quietly, with symptoms we don’t recognize and challenges we don’t expect. We often feel unprepared for “the big M”, often seeing it as something that only happens to “older women,” when in reality, many begin experiencing symptoms years before their cycles end.

I often have conversations with friends about this interesting, surprising, and sometimes challenging season of life, and that’s why when I sat down with Dr. Jill Waggoner, I had to ask her about it. In this episode, Dr. Jill sheds light on what menopause really is, what to expect, and how to care for your body with intention and wisdom during this stage of life.

Dr. Jill Waggoner is the kind of doctor who doesn’t just hand you a prescription. She helps you understand what’s happening on a deeper level. In our conversation, she explained the stages of menopause, why symptoms often show up before we expect them, and how stress can make everything feel heavier. She also reminded me that most women will spend a third of their lives in menopause, which gives us a powerful reason to approach this season with care and attention.

But this conversation wasn’t only about menopause. Dr. Jill shared how she balances her own busy life – and how sometimes that balance is more of a juggling act than a steady rhythm. We also talked about the importance of being your own advocate. It’s easy to settle for doctors who don’t listen or offices that feel rushed and impersonal. Dr. Jill walked us through what to look for when choosing a new doctor’s office.

And when it comes to taking care of our bodies every day and what to put in them, she let us know that we don’t all have to become vegans! If you want to treat your body right there’s a way to do with even the smallest adjustments (like not stopping at McDonald’s for that fry and ice-cold Coke), that make the biggest difference.

I know this conversation will encourage you to slow down and pay attention to what your body is telling you and also what your soul needs. You don’t have to be caught off guard by menopause or try to push through burnout and exhaustion on your own. There are resources, wisdom, and people who can help you navigate these changes. Take the time to ask the right questions, find the right support, and care for yourself well – not just for this season, but for the years ahead. You are worth that kind of care.
