Podcast: Play in new window
Today, I want to talk about what it means to be free – like really free. To me, personal freedom is having the ability and privilege to live in integrity with myself. What does that mean in short form? That I am free to be me – to be the me that the Creator has been building all along. That I am free to discover, free to learn, free to express, free to try, free to be something I never knew I could be. That I am free to operate to the best of my ability in the season that I am in.
Of course, there are different types of freedom that people may be seeking such as spiritual freedom, financial freedom, or relational freedom. But no matter the type, I believe that there are three things that are required for us to live in integrity with ourselves and to experience what it is to truly live free.
Freedom Requires Sacrifice
The first is that your freedom will require sacrifice. If you want to be spiritually free, you’ll have to sacrifice your will for God’s. If you want to be financially free, you’ll have to sacrifice some of your wants to get out of debt and stay out of debt. If you want to be relationally free, you’ll have to sacrifice your time to have great relationships. The only person who can make the investment and sacrifice to fight for you is you. The only person who must be willing to fight on the frontlines of your life for freedom is you. The only person who’s energy will be required is yours. Yes, friends may come alongside you from time to time, but freedom will always require a sacrifice from you and of you.
So I ask, where are you fighting for freedom and what is the sacrifice required?
Freedom Requires Honesty
The second thing that freedom requires is honesty. In order to have true freedom, you have to admit where you are not free. When you want to do something, but then you begin to question yourself or doubt yourself or talk yourself out of it, that, my friend, is the very place where you are not free. The truth is freedom will only come when you unlock the chains that are holding you back. Acknowledging where you hesitate in your life is one of the first keys that will begin to unlock the chains. Being honest with yourself requires a measure of accountability from yourself – and that brings me to my next point.
Freedom Requires Action
The third thing that freedom requires is action. Let’s first talk about what action is not. Action is not talking about your desire to be free. Freedom requires movement.. So the question is what action do you need to take to become free? You can only take the right action when you acknowledge there is a problem. Once you acknowledge the problem, you can acquire the right tools – if you don’t already have them. And once you acquire the right tools, then you will have to actually use the tools to unlock your freedom.
The bottom line is this: When you walk in freedom, you get to experience your life to the fullest. But it will require a sacrifice. It will require honesty. It will require action. Reach for freedom and know that when you do the God who frees is also reaching for you.
