How do you recover after you’ve let yourself down? When the motivation begins to wane and the guilt begins to set in, you can find yourself in a low place. But my friend, you can’t stay there.

The enemy wants nothing more than for you to wallow in your shortcomings until it becomes a part of your identity. Instead of being the person who struggles to lose weight, you label yourself as lazy. And even though you are a good person, past relationships have led you to believe that you are difficult and too sensitive. Maybe you’ve told yourself you just can’t and that change is not possible. And the enemy would love to keep you in that place… but that doesn’t have to be your story. You have the power to choose. You have the God who is more than able on your side.

Thank God for grace. You deserve the chance to tell yourself a different story. And if you want different results, you have to do something different.

Start with Your Systems

Often, an inability to implement healthy habits is due to a lack of supportive systems. You need some type of structure to keep track of where you are and set intentions for where you want to be. Whether it be a planner, like The Full Circle Planner I’ve created, the notes app on your phone, or your everyday spiral notebook,  pick a place to keep track of your decisions. Write it down!

And there’s nothing wrong with setting alarms as a reminder to do whatever you’ve decided is important: i.e., go to the gym, drink your water, get to bed at a decent time. Over time, these habits will become a part of your daily rhythms and become easy to maintain. Getting started is the hard part. As you pay attention to your life, keeping things going gets easier with time.

Surround Yourself with Support

Even with the best of systems in place, there is nothing quite like the power of other people. A praying friend can keep you encouraged when you’re at your lowest. Your circle makes all the difference when it comes to achieving your goals. It’s amazing to have someone in your life who will specifically ask you, “When are you doing ‘X’ thing?” or “What’s the next step you can take this week?”.  There is so much strength in having others come alongside you and cheer you on or believe in you enough to ask the hard questions.

When you begin to show up in environments that foster connection, like the gym, a small group, or online communities like my Inner Circle community, it won’t take long for you to find supportive people. And don’t underestimate the people who are already in your life. Is there someone that you’ve overlooked because they seem too busy or unapproachable? They just might be looking for someone like you to be part of their circle.

Surrender Your Plans to the Lord

Even with the best of intentions, you can find yourself chasing after a dream that God never even approved of. But oh, what peace you will have when you know your desires line up with God’s plans for your life. He knows what lies ahead for you. Commit the time to praying, spending time in the Word, and being still in His presence to help you refocus on the right goals for your future and to help you let go of anything you aren’t meant to move forward with.

When you pray, allow God time to speak to your heart. Leave room for silence and stillness. If you’ve grown weary in striving toward your goals, review what God has already said in His Word. Try resting in the promises of God. (Galatians 6:9 is a good one) Surround yourself with encouraging messages from the Word and from other faith-filled people so you have the reassurance you need when doubt creeps in.

Sing a New Song

When life blows out the fire in your heart and you don’t feel like getting up to fight again, that’s just the moment to remember why you started in the first place. There was a reason why you decided to do a new thing in your life. Hold on to that even when it gets hard.

Remember, you are not a failure.

Even if you feel as if the recurring theme in your life is that you always let yourself down, you have the power to reframe your narrative. Give yourself grace. You are human. Most of all, you are a child of the Most High God.

It’s time to tell yourself a new story.

And I hope this podcast gives you the tools you need to do just that.
