Podcast: Play in new window
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by money struggles or buried under shame about your finances, you are not alone. I recently had the privilege of sitting down with Tiffany Aliche, also known as The Budgetnista, and her story is proof that no matter how deep the hole feels, there’s a way out. Tiffany is “America’s favorite financial educator,” but what really stood out to me was her transparency about her own financial struggles.
Tiffany grew up learning about money from her parents. Her father – a CFO and financial advisor – taught her about money, and her mother – a working mom and nurse taught her how to execute based on that knowledge. Tiffany had a great relationship with money early on. But at 25, after purchasing a condo and finishing her master’s degree, she was hit hard by the recession. She lost her teaching job, was scammed by a friend, and found herself more than $300,000 in debt. She went from financial security to couch surfing and dealing with crushing shame.
Tiffany’s story and her approachability made this interview practically helpful and fun! I’m so grateful that Tiffany is willing to be honest with her story so that she can help others. One of my biggest takeaways from our conversation was the role shame plays in financial struggles. Shame loves secrecy, and the only way to break free is to bring the things that are embarrassing or challenging about our financial situation into the light. Whether you’re in debt, behind on bills, or just feeling financially lost, it’s essential to find someone you trust – someone who won’t judge you – and share the truth about your situation.
This is just one principled nugget-of-goodness that Tiffany shared on the show. Tiffany is a teacher and is regularly educating others about 10 components of financial wholeness.
- Budgeting
- Savings
- Debt
- Credit
- Earning
- Investing
- Insurance
- Net Worth
- Financial Team
- Estate Planning
Tiffany has shared many of these principles online, through her courses, in her books, and now she has the opportunity to educate others in a new and fun way!

If you are struggling to get yourself out of a tough financial situation, here are two steps that I encourage everyone to take:
1 – Get out of the shame wheel
Shame is one of the biggest barriers to financial freedom. It keeps you stuck in silence, replaying mistakes over and over in your mind. Tiffany reminded us that shame loves darkness – it thrives in secrecy. But when you bring your struggles into the light, they start to lose their power over you. Acknowledging where you are financially, without judgment, is the first step toward change. You cannot fix what you won’t face, and the longer you hide, the heavier the burden becomes.
Instead of letting shame define your story, start rewriting it with honesty and self-compassion. You are not your bank account or your debt. Your current financial situation is simply a snapshot, not the entire picture. Release the weight of “should have” and “if only,” and allow yourself the grace to begin again. There is freedom in saying, “This is where I am, but it’s not where I’ll stay.”
2- Ask for help
You were never meant to do this alone. So many people silently carry financial stress because they’re afraid of being judged. But asking for help is not a weakness – it’s wisdom. Whether it’s sitting down with a trusted friend who can listen without judgment or seeking professional guidance, support makes all the difference. Sometimes, all it takes is having someone help you look at the numbers clearly and create a simple plan for moving forward.
One resource Tiffany highly recommends is the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). The NFCC connects you with certified counselors who can help you understand your financial situation, create a debt repayment plan, and explore alternatives to bankruptcy. You can find more information at www.nfcc.org. Asking for help is a sign that you’re ready to step out of the darkness and into a healthier financial future.
I hope you find encouragement and practical wisdom in this episode. Remember that you can rebuild, and there are resources and people who want to help you do just that.
