Have you ever found yourself falling into habits or relationships you knew weren’t good for you, but the satisfaction of the moment or the emptiness of your life drew you in? In this episode, I talk about the concept of “cuffing season.” Whether you have heard of this phrase or not, this is a conversation worth having! Cuffing season traditionally occurs during winter as people intentionally “cuff” themselves together to make it through the lonely and cold winter months. They willingly enter a relationship knowing it won’t last, but the thought of going through winter alone is too much to bear. But is it really worth it? Does it really make your life better?

Friend, listen to your auntie Chrystal…

Any short-term fix will only cause an even greater crater in your soul. And I’m not just referring to dating relationships. You can apply the concept of cuffing season to all sorts of things – busyness, past accolades/success, work, Netflix. What has been your “cuff” of choice? Where do you run to fill the void of your soul? Habits can enslave you. Relationships can enslave you. Wasted time can enslave you. Spending can enslave you. The difference is what you choose to enslave yourself to. Will you choose the shortcut, or will you choose the path of diligence and freedom? You were made to be free, and I want you to live a life of freedom! While freedom does come with responsibility, that life is worth the cost.

So how do you live a life of freedom? I’m so glad you asked.

  • Get very clear on what you want
  • Decide what you’re willing to do to get it
  • Set boundaries so you stay in your lane

Freedom is a decision — an ongoing decision you make that will lead you to make some hard choices at times. Freedom will require that you be willing to do what other people are not. However, going against the grain of the crowd is usually where freedom is found.

Narrow is the way to life and wide is the path to destruction (Matthew 7:13-14).

The good news is you have the Spirit of God in you to help you along the way! You don’t have to walk this life alone. I encourage you to get plugged into a local community, but if you don’t have a community of your own, come join me and a group of awesome girls in The Inner Circle. We would love to connect with you on the inside. Whether you connect with others in real life or online, you have no reason to walk through life alone or wonder about how you can live wisely.

I would love to hear from you if you would be so brave as to share – what has been cuffing you? You can share with me in the comments of this post. What will you trade your freedom for? What do you really want? Who do you want to be? What are you willing to do to get there? And whether you share here or not, I encourage you to spend some time with those questions and ask the Spirit of God to help you with the answers.

Here’s to freedom and to choosing the way of life.
