Do you ever feel like you’re just all over the place? Your life may be full of things you love, but it can be hard to know – is THIS what I’m “supposed” to be doing? Do I focus here or there? Should I invest my time in “x” commitment or “y” commitment? How do I find my purpose in life? These are questions I find myself asking OFTEN. What about you? Do any of these questions ever pop up in her mind?

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion with some members of my family. Someone from the audience posed this question to me specifically, “Out of all the things you are doing right now, which of those things do you enjoy the most?”. Let me just say I was NOT prepared to answer this question. I mean, how am I supposed to choose just ONE thing? While I tried my best to give a somewhat thoughtful on-the-spot answer, I’m pretty sure I rambled my way through my attempt to respond.

The problem is that I am a multi-passionate person. I’ve even recorded a podcast with one of my friends about what it looks like to be multi-passionate (you can listen here!). I love to speak, write, and sing. I’m a homeschool mom, an owner of a small business, and a leader at my church. And even after reading many books that tell me I should focus and narrow my attention, I still find myself with a notebook full of ideas and dreams. And you know what? I’m okay with that! Focus is good. Passion is good too.

In this episode, I want to talk about a key to unlocking your purpose and embracing the many gifts that God has given you. After doing my own soul searching, I find myself more and more believing a beautiful truth. The answer is not as simple as finding that “one” thing you want to focus on but recognizing what you are to focus on this season. My mother used to talk about the Seasons of a Woman’s Life, and her wisdom resonates with me today. Your life is made up of seasons. Give yourself permission to ebb and flow with the seasons of your life. Ask yourself, where do I feel God’s pleasure, purpose, power, and passion?

For me, I feel the pleasure of God when I sing. I sense the purpose of God when I write. I am filled with the power of God when I speak. When I lead, disciple, and mentor, I know that I’m cooperating with God’s passion for His people. Oh! And along the way, I make PB&J sandwiches because motherhood has defined every one of the adult seasons I’ve lived through.

The reality for many of us is that our focus will be defined by the season we are in. There are many things that fill our lives with joy and intentionality. Some things may bring us great joy, and other things we may do simply because that is what the season calls for. And that’s okay too.

I make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches many days in this season I’m in. But you know what I’ve found? The PB&J seasons are the stuff of which life is actually made. The “regularly-everyday-days” are really the “good ol’ days.”

In whatever season you may find yourself, ask yourself these questions:

  • What gives you pleasure?
  • When do you feel like you’re operating in your purpose?
  • When do you feel God’s power?
  • When do you know you are cooperating with the passion God has for his people?
  • Where in your life do you just need to be willing to just show up and simply do what needs to be done?

Do a little soul searching, then give yourself the freedom to ebb and flow with the rhythm of your life. Keep living and showing up for the things God has put in your path. If you feel a little discombobulated, just keep going! The picture will become clear as you put one foot in front of the other. Here’s to a life of pleasure, purpose, power, passion, and PB&J’s.
