Do you ever wish you had more time in your day? When you constantly feel like you’re playing catch-up from the day before, that’s a clear sign that it’s time to set rhythms and routines that work for you. Morning and evening routines are especially important as they set the tone for how you begin and end your day.

Without the structure of routine, you’ll find yourself living without a sense of direction, flowing every way the wind blows. It’s so important to be aware of your daily tasks and rhythms so that you can live a peaceful and intentional life.

Who Do You Want to Become?

Before you create new rhythms for your life, you want to think about how you want to grow in the process. If you want to be someone who takes care of her home, then you’ll need to incorporate rhythms of cleaning and organizing your home into your day. If you want to love your people well, then you’ll want to chart out time for your loved ones in your schedule. Setting rhythms and routines doesn’t have to be an overwhelming thing. You just have to be clear on your “why” for showing up each day. Then, when your motivation begins to wane, you’ll have a reason to keep moving the needle forward.

Make Small and Consistent Changes

As you begin to plan new routines, consider the season you’re in. If you’re staying up late completing assignments for a master’s program, you may need to lower your expectations for getting up early in the morning. The same rules apply when caring for a newborn. If you’re an empty nester, you may have more time and less clarity on how to spend it. One thing that has helped me throughout my different seasons of life is the practice of anchoring my mornings and evenings with simple rhythms.

Morning rhythms can look like:

  • stretching when you wake up
  • praying while preparing breakfast
  • playing worship music while getting ready

Evening rhythms can look like:

  • laying out your clothes for the next day
  • journaling for a few minutes before bed
  • saying a prayer to end the day

You don’t have to plan out every second of your day, but adding in a few small rhythms will help you start and end your day well.

Protect Your Rhythms at All Costs

It’s imperative that you guard your time by communicating your rhythms to your people. Here are a few ways to keep your rhythms in clear view.

  1. Chart out your rhythms and routines in a planner – understand what you need to do consistently and the best time to do it.
  2. Share your commitments and your rhythms with anyone who will be affected by them, including your family, friends, and extended family.
  3. Set boundaries around your time and space to prevent distractions and demands from interrupting your goals.

There will never be a perfect time to make changes to your life, but you have the power to add in small rhythms right now. Before you know it, these steps will move you closer to the life you’ve been dreaming of.
