Is it hard for you to see Jesus at work in your everyday life?

The busyness of life can often blind you to the very things God is trying to reveal to you.

My oldest daughter, Kariss Farris, has learned how to look for Jesus in real-life moments. She notices Him while running a photography business with her husband Josh and in the middle of parenting my four (soon to be five) grandchildren.

Not only is Kariss preparing to bring a new baby into the world, but she is also releasing her first book into the world! Kariss has written a beautiful new devotional, “Jesus Everywhere: 60 Days of Encountering God in Unexpected Places.” This collection of quiet time writings began as a collection of inspirational Instagram posts Kariss shared out of the overflow of her heart.

Funny enough, it wasn’t her original plan to write a book! Let’s just say that in our homeschool experience, I don’t remember formal composition ever being one of her favorite assignments to complete! But as a mother, I have to tell you, I’m amazed at how God always has a plan for every season of our life – and His plans usually aren’t the ones we had in mind. I’m also honored to see His plans for my daughter’s life unfold and grateful that I’m here to see it and celebrate this new project alongside her.

And just in case you didn’t know, this is often how God works. There may be some things you plan on doing, and then there are the things God will bring to pass as the result of you following His lead.

Because I want to join my daughter in celebrating her new “book baby”, I sat down with Kariss recently for a heartwarming mother-daughter conversation. Now y’all know that there was a little bit of foolery in the convo, but we were also able to chat about three specific things you can do to see Jesus in your everyday.

Look for Jesus in everyday moments – These days, it’s so easy to get a peak at everyone’s morning routines and quiet time on social media, but sometimes God is calling you to invite Him into every moment of your life. Do you go throughout your day looking for God? What if you opened your eyes and heart to see God’s hand in your life?

Follow where He leads – As you begin to discover God at work in your life, write down the things you notice or the lessons you learn. Not only can you benefit from this wisdom recorded over time, but as you build a record of God’s presence in your life you will also build your faith. If you pay attention, you’ll begin to notice patterns of Jesus speaking to you about the same things over and over again. You’ll begin to see how God is developing you in the process.  When you write down what you notice about God’s activity in your life, you will also increase the level of your gratitude to Him for His hand in your life, and you will leave a monument of God’s goodness to the generation coming behind you as well.

Trust God to exceed your expectations – During our homeschool days, I couldn’t fathom that Kariss would be the author of a devotional, but honestly, she has always exceeded my expectations in the areas of her passion or gifting. You may find this to be true in your own life. You may not be able to comprehend what God has planned for you. But that’s the amazing part! The next chapter(s) of your story may be unclear, but if you keep leaning into God even in the mundane moments, He can go above and beyond what you have planned for yourself (Ephesians 3:20-21).

I know it can be frustrating when life is moving along and you struggle to hear His voice, but small miracles are happening around you all the time. I challenge you to invite God into every aspect of your life and ask Him to show you what you’re missing.

My prayer for you is that you will experience Jesus to the full. Then, my hope for you is that the overflow of your experience with Him will increase your love for your life, even the parts that seem ordinary at first glance.

Here’s to you knowing Jesus.

And here’s to Jesus showing up in your life in the most beautifully unexpected way.
