Podcast: Play in new window
Are you so busy living your life that you find yourself missing your life?
Listen, I know what it’s like to look up one day and wonder where the time went. One day, you’re searching for the light at the end of the tunnel, and the next day, you’re walking across the stage to receive your diploma, dropping your babies off at college, or moving away from the place you thought you’d always call home.
It really does happen that fast. If you’re in the thick of a busy season right now, just know that one day you’ll be looking back on these moments and wishing you could relive them just one more time. And while there’s nothing wrong with reminiscing, what you don’t want is a life full of regret, all because you didn’t slow down to fully live your life.
The truth is, despite your best efforts, there’s no way to add more time to your day. But you can choose to make the most of what you’ve been given. When I find that life is moving faster than I can keep up, that’s when I know it’s time to slow down.
Stillness Brings Clarity
Getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of life can blind you to what truly matters. Just think about it, how often do you find yourself struggling to hear from God until you’re forced to slow down? It might be countercultural, but being still is what reveals your priorities. When it feels like you have more things to do than hours in the day, the ability to find peace in the quiet moments is what will keep you from completely losing hope. So take one step today: leave your phone in another room, ask your people for a little time alone, and lean into prayer and God’s Word.
True Rest Will Renew You
The push to live a busy life is only intensified through societal pressures and external expectations. It’s not enough to sign your child up for every sport, maintain a spotless home, and figure out a new way to cook chicken for dinner each night. Now, every time you pull out your phone, you’re met with constant comparison and feelings of not quite measuring up to the next person. But you weren’t called to keep up with everyone else. You were called to live your life with the freedom and joy that comes from truly resting in Jesus. He left the perfect reminder in His Word to find rest in Him: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) You can’t do it all on your own, and you were never meant to.
How to Choose Presence Over Productivity
When you finally decide to rest and honor the Sabbath in your life, you’ll see more opportunities to be present. Sure, you could check off all of the tasks on your to-do list, but that only provides temporary satisfaction. What if you left margin in your calendar for actually enjoying your life?
How would your life look if you:
- Joined your family on the couch instead of cleaning up the kitchen
- Curled up with a good book, even though the laundry is piling up
- Listened to nature during a walk instead of wearing headphones or talking on the phone
Something powerful happens when you let go of being busy and prioritize being present. You’ll find that you can still be productive and reach your goals, even if you take the scenic route and move at a slower pace. The difference is, you’ll reach the finish line without forfeiting beautiful memories and moments along the way. You may even find that everything you’re striving for is already right in front of you.
So breathe, slow down, and live in the moment. Your heart, mind, and soul will be so much better for it.
