When was the last time you felt truly rested? I’m not talking about the struggle to get enough sleep at night, although that is important. When was the last time you got rest for your soul?

My friend Asheritah Ciuciu joined me for a chat about finding true rest in Jesus. She is a wife, mother, accomplished author, and Bible teacher who launched seven books in six years.

Asheritah’s online ministry, One Thing Alone, draws inspiration from Martha in the Bible and her struggle to rest. She encourages women to engage with God and His word in creative ways. Perhaps what makes her ministry so powerful is that it began with her own fight to spend time in His presence.

I know that sometimes it can feel intimidating to get in the presence of God. During our conversation, Asheritah shared a memorable acronym for rest that will help us invite God into our daily lives with ease.

R – Recite God’s goodness. Begin your conversation with God by meditating on His goodness. Reflect on the ways in which He has revealed His character to you in the past and in the present. Mentally take a step back from your troubles and lean into adoration of the One who has all power in His hands. He’s still good through it all.

E – Express your neediness. What is weighing heavy on your heart? You can take comfort in knowing that God cares about your concerns. Bring your worries to the Lord and cast your cares on Him.

S – Seek His stillness. Silence the noise for just a moment. Place your phone in another room, close your eyes, give the kids something to do, and give God space to speak to you. If you find it difficult to quiet your mind, ask the Lord if it’s time to let some things go.

T – Trust God’s faithfulness. There is so much to be worried about. The troubles of the world are constantly in our faces. We were never meant to carry all of this alone. Lean on God. Place your anxious thoughts and weariness in His hands. Allow the peace of God to wash over you.

The beauty of this practice is that you don’t have to chart out hours to do it. You can walk through these steps while cleaning the house, sitting in traffic, or even rocking your baby to sleep. Find little pockets of time to be still and R.E.S.T.

I was so encouraged by Asheritah’s commitment to getting alone with God despite her responsibilities. I pray that you will find rest for your soul through time in His presence.

There is rest for the weary.
