Do you find yourself feeling like you’re behind in life? When your reality isn’t lining up with your dreams, it’s easy to miss out on what God is trying to cultivate in you.

Just think about it. When a flower blooms, you don’t see everything it took to get to that point. You don’t see the seeds that were planted or the water and sunlight poured into it, but you know that the flower didn’t flourish on its own. After all, a flower only blooms at the right time and under the right conditions.

And just like that flower, think of the beauty you’d miss out on if you bloomed before your time.

Listen, I’m not telling you to ignore the dreams in your heart. But when the passion to achieve a goal becomes unnecessary pressure, it’s time to allow God to take the lead in your life.

You weren’t meant to live in a constant state of anxiety and stress. I want to offer you a few ways to respond when it seems that life is passing you by.

Find peace in God’s plan

I know just how hard it is to ignore the ticking of the clock. Not only is it disappointing to let go of your desired deadlines for goals like getting a degree or starting a family, but it can also feel unfair. Watching the people in your life live out the dreams you once carried is enough to make even the strongest believers turn away from their faith. But you can’t let that be the end of your story. I’m reminded of the line in the popular song “Waymaker” that goes “Even when I can’t see it, You’re working; even when I can’t feel it, You’re working.” Just because things are still, that doesn’t mean God isn’t up to something. And you can trust that what He’s doing is for your good, even if it’s simply the character He’s developing in you while you wait.

Focus on your unique path

The pressure to keep up with everyone else’s pace is a very real thing. And with social media at your fingertips, you can easily fall into the comparison trap. However, when you commit to running your race, you’ll find that there’s no need to compare. God created you for such a time as this. Don’t waste your life trying to live someone else’s life. Instead, view their wins as proof that you can accomplish your goals too. Clap for the people in your life while knowing that your breakthrough is coming. And as you celebrate the success of others, they will be there to celebrate you when it’s your time.

Flourish in your faith

There were times in the past when it seemed like my plans were falling apart. But now I can see that God was doing a great work in me. Sometimes, you just can’t see it until things are in full bloom. That’s the power of trusting God’s timing for your life. It doesn’t always feel good, but it’s certainly better than sleepless nights and stressful days. You have what it takes to keep growing, even in the dry seasons of life. So don’t rush the process. There’s beauty in acknowledging what happens in the meantime. Lean into God’s Word and trust that if He carried you from your past to your present, then He can carry you from your present to your future.

When you do your part to tend to what God has entrusted you with, you’ll begin to see just how beautiful and purposeful life truly is.

You are always on time for the plan God has for your life. Maybe, just maybe, you’re not behind after all.
