Podcast: Play in new window
What do you do when your dreams get derailed? When things don’t pan out the way you planned, disappointment can take root in your heart. However, I’m here to tell you that a delayed dream doesn’t have to be the end of your story.
I know that these moments can be some of the most difficult to navigate. If you’re wondering how to move forward when nothing seems to be working out, allow me to share a few ways to forge ahead, even when it feels like your dreams are drifting away.
Move at a Slower Pace
It’s tempting to try to take matters into your own hands when life doesn’t go according to plan. But that often makes things worse and adds more stress to an already frustrating situation.
Instead of reacting out of fear, you can slow things down by:
- Spending time in the presence of God – Find pockets of time to strengthen your relationship with God by turning off all distractions so that you can hear His voice.
- Connecting with others – Talking things through with trusted people can give you clarity on dreams that are worth pursuing and those that aren’t.
- Writing down your thoughts – Process your thoughts by putting pen to paper and letting everything in your heart flow out.
- Adopting an attitude of gratitude – Focusing on the good in your situation, even in the midst of the bad, will shift your attention to all the things that are going right in your life.
When you slow down the speed at which you reach for your dreams, you will be able to adjust to God’s timing for your life.
Keep Your Dreams In Focus
Once you get clear on the dreams you’re supposed to go after, you have to be super intentional about keeping them in front of you. Commit to checking in with yourself at least quarterly to remember your current dreams and make room to dream new ones. And if you need to break down your goals into smaller, more attainable goals, then by all means, do it. Making small investments in yourself is always better than doing nothing at all.
Live Within Your Season
Sometimes, as much as you want to pursue a dream, it’s just not the right time. I know this all too well. I’ve been open about my commitment to fine-tune my piano playing, and while I have the space to do that in this season of my life, it was difficult to do so when I was homeschooling tiny children. As hard as it is to press pause on a dream, there are some seasons when it’s necessary, but that doesn’t mean it will never happen. God may just be shaping you to withstand all that comes with the dream. He could also be working behind the scenes to blow your mind and exceed every expectation you have.
Maybe your dream feels far out of reach, but know that all good things take time. And what God started in your life, He is faithful to see it through. (Philippians 1:6)
Remember to hold on to the good in this season. This chapter of your life can be beautiful too.
And in due time, God will grant you the grace and space to pursue that dream in your heart.
