Podcast: Play in new window
What is your body telling you? For many of us, listening to our bodies doesn’t come naturally. Despite our many attempts at self-care, tuning into our deepest needs tends to come second. But what would happen if you took the time to be with you? To feel the shifts in your body? To release the tension you carry? What would you discover? If you listen close enough, you might be surprised at what you hear.
We listen to many things, but imagine what could be achieved if we began to listen to ourselves.
Trust me, I get it.
Sometimes pressing pause in life is just not that simple. But what if I told you it is possible to take a moment to engage your body for what you really need? All it takes is a few minutes of being present to yourself for you to notice how you feel, to acknowledge the truest version of who you are, and to practice the ministry of presence.
If your life is anything like mine, then your needs might be hiding behind the endless to-do list that grows by the minute or the barrage of decisions to be made every day. Maybe you only scratch the surface of thinking about your overall well-being because you simply have other things to do and thinking about you feels like another item on your list. But what you need to know is this… it doesn’t have to be complicated.
Learning to be present with yourself is easy. A deep breath in through your nose and very slowly out through your mouth. Relaxing the muscles in your jaw. Loosening the tension in your shoulders. Planting both feet flat on the ground.
What is your body communicating to you about the amount of stress you carry and your need for peace? How might your body be telling you that you’ve pushed yourself beyond your limitations? What message is being translated about your inability to trust God with a moment of rest? Maybe your eyes are dry because you’ve been looking at a screen for too long. Or your lips are dry because you have been engulfed in many conversations.
How are you REALLY doing?
In your mind.
In your heart.
In your skin.
It’s okay to know you.
It’s good to be aware of who you are and how you are doing in this present moment.
Sit in silence with yourself today. Pay attention. Recognize what your body is requiring of you.
Your body can be your greatest ally if only you’d allow it. Position yourself to notice its natural cues.
When you learn to listen to your body, you will learn to live well.
