Can I be honest? Finishing what I start can sometimes be a struggle for me. Can you relate? While I begin with every intention of seeing each task, responsibility, goal, or endeavor through to the end, somewhere down the line, I can get off track. Another task to do, a book to read, or an errand to run steals my attention, and then – before you know it – I’ve put off what I initially started for a later time.

And I bet you can guess what happens next…

I never get to it.

Maybe this happens to you. Something comes up, you decide to take a social media break, and then – before you know it – you’re derailed from what you were doing, or you lose the drive to get back to it and keep going.

Here’s what I’ve discovered…

Despite becoming distracted, lacking motivation, or feeling like there just isn’t enough time, you are capable of finishing what you start.

The key is keeping the finish line in front of you.

Remember the reason you first set the goal. Think about why you dreamed the dream, made the decision, or made the commitment. What was the draw? How does your life or the lives of others benefit from your decision to finish? In keeping the end in mind, we are more likely to persevere through hardships or setbacks. Seek to set priorities that safeguard your goals and drive you toward completion.

Have a plan. A sure way of drifting from your goals is not establishing a plan for how to achieve them. What step can be taken today? This week? This month? What if you don’t know what to do? Act on the knowledge you have. Do not prevent yourself from moving forward because you do not have all the steps. Trust that as you go, the goal you are working towards will become realized. And don’t forget to revisit your plan. Give yourself permission to update and change your plan as needed.

Establish accountability and community. Becoming a finisher means ensuring that you have the support needed to make it to the finish line. Who do you know is working towards the same goal? Who’s in your corner? Identify your greatest support. Who doesn’t mind telling you the truth? Are there people in your life that are willing to challenge you and stretch you? Bring the right people along to partner with you in completing what you begin.

Make room for your finish. What are you carrying? Is there anything on your plate that is taking unnecessary space? How might you need to shift things around or remove something altogether to create the margin needed to focus on the finish?

Talk to yourself like you are a finisher. Maybe you are not where you desire to be. It is possible that your personal vantage point could be causing you to lose hope in your ability to stay the course.  Change your outcome by changing your outlook. Gain perspective through your speech. Speak life and not death (Proverbs 18:21).  How are you encouraging yourself with your words? What truth do you need to speak to propel you towards your desired end?

Becoming a finisher both begins and ends with a decision. You get to decide that every step towards finishing what you start is worth your “yes.”

YOU have what it takes!

Decide what means something to you and take actionable steps towards that end. Being intentional with the desires in your heart and the dreams you start is a sure way of becoming a person who lives with little to no regret.
