Podcast: Play in new window
This week, I’ve started a 28 day challenge on Instagram so that we can encourage each other to develop and practice a dynamic and consistent prayer life. If you haven’t heard anything about it, please take a moment to check out the details as I’d love to have you join the party!
Last week, I broke my regularly scheduled Monday podcast release (or mostly regularly) and had my sister, Priscilla Shirer over for a chat about making movies, prayer, and pushing past your fears. If you missed that, please make sure you go back and listen.
It’s gonna knock your socks off.
I promise.
After talking with her, I’m over the top about how this film will impact God’s people to accept the challenge for strategic prayer. But I’m also over the top about the opportunity to chat with my dad, Dr. Tony Evans about prayer too.
In this episode, I take the time to ask him poignant questions about prayer, it’s importance, and the barriers that sometimes block us from activating this powerful spiritual habit in our lives.
This one is gonna knock your socks off too.
Yup. I’m promising again.
I’m not a theologian.
Not even close.
So when I have questions that I want answers to regarding my life as a believer, where do I go? I go to church.
But if it’s not a Sunday, I pick up the phone and call my Dad.
Join me as he walks us through what prayer is, why it matters, and what are the other spiritual disciplines people who love God should practice regularly.
Highlights from Today’s Episode:
“A Chat with Tony Evans”
- Prayer is open, honest, and consistent communication with God.
- You find God when you look Him in a variety of everyday places.
- Spiritual disciplines are those practices that help you stay connected with God.

When Dr. Tony said that many times we don’t hear God because we are looking for the answer in the way we went to hear Him. Well, that spoke to me. Many times I can get frustrated because I have determined how I desire God to answer and I don’t see it happening. Right now, I am in that place. God has opened doors for our family to move and help build a church. I KNOW that God has shown himself powerfully, but right now my husband and I are living separately because he can’t find a job here. That frustrates me because I want him to be here with our family. This frustration has led to doubt and Satan has capitalized on that in the form of my husband being offered many job offers with his current job in another state. I know that it is because God has blessed him with an amazing work ethic, but it’s frustrating and disappointing that he hasn’t been offered any job here with us. I know that God is in every detail, but I do feel, like my faith is being tested. I pray about it daily and wait (not so patiently sometimes) for God to answer.
In referencing your comment about calling on the lord when you say Jesus help me not to hurt my child…lol…what is the difference between saying that and using his name in vain? Sometimes I just say “Lord Jesus” and part of it is a force of habit and part of it is because at that time I need him to help with the specific situation I am currently in but other people take that to mean I’m using his name in vain? Am I?
I texted my Dad to ask him 🙂 He said, “No, she is sincerely asking God for help. It’s not in vain.” Hope that helps!
[…] Does the normal in my life – my family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, converge with what should also be normal in your prayer closet – my honest and open consistent communication with the God of the universe? […]

While parked at my employer’s terminal, (and I stopped church-hopping out-of-state a while ago), I had to take another run at this episode. The good doctor confirmed very well what has taken a while for me to learn. “Devotion is neither coerced nor legislated. It is cultivated.” It started some time ago for me, oddly enough at a prayer meeting, during which time I assumed I had something to say to the Lord He never heard before…until that night, where I learned for the first time that 1) God can embarrass you in private when He has to, 2) He has lots more to say to me than I to Him so I best “learn how to listen and then listen to learn”…
Today’s one of those days I wish communion with God was easier…but among many other such things I’ve learned to be grateful He’s anything but easy. Yeah, I know, “His yoke is easy”…that’s in Old English. In the original, “My yoke fits well.” …Oops…that means it’s suited just for me…oh, yeah, “yoke” is a harness for two or more. That’s why it’s “easy”…I’m wearing it alongside Him Who’s been wearing it the whole time. OK Bless you guys…
Hi Chrystal!!
I know I am extremely (really, really) late in posting a message, but THIS podcast was just…so much that I needed! Of course I listen in to everything that you post, but this one was so near to my heart in this season in my life. Being that my family have grown up in the church and have a long list of pastors it would seem that we have this prayer/relationship thing all figured out. We don’t. But once I listened to this podcast I immediately called my mom and “broke it down” and she enjoyed the way that your dad explained things. As always, THANK YOU. God bless you and your family!!

Wow…was that encouraging! I have a pretty strong and healthy prayer life, but like anyone else I get distracted at times and it is not as robust as it should be. This really put so much into perspective. With 4 children, some days are busier than others. Prayers time will look different on some days.
Chrystal, thank you for this podcast. I listen to your father, Tony Evan daily. I have been going through some things and the issue of prayer is a core issue that I wrestle with. Most of all you asked ALL of the questions to your dad that I have been wondering — and I feel through the Holy Spirit my questions were answered. Great job!
Awesome! Thanks for listening!
