Podcast: Play in new window
Does the new year mean a new year? Well, that depends. Surely the start of a new year brings opportunities to level up your life, but it also brings pressure to take off at full speed.
But even if you feel pressure, you don’t have to give in to it. While there certainly is a time for realizing goals and dreams, there is also a time for trusting that you can slow down for a season and everything will be okay.
Working to solve all of your problems in one day is not worth your peace or your sanity. If you live too far in the future, you’ll begin to take on worries that aren’t meant for today. (Matthew 6:34) You’ll also miss out on the special moments right in front of you.
I need you to shift your focus to the current season that you’re in. As you navigate this year, there are a few things to keep in mind for every season you encounter.
Understand the season you’re in.
Scripture says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1) Some seasons in life will require you to rise to the occasion, while other seasons will require you to rest and reflect. Make the space to pray, journal, and be still so that God’s voice can rise above the distractions.
Life will pull you in every direction. It’s so important to know what to let go of and what to prioritize. Allow yourself to hear from God so that you can live each day with clarity and only focus on the things that matter in this season of your life.
Move at your own pace.
When I homeschooled my kids, I didn’t teach them all of the material at once. Instead, I slowly introduced concepts to each child based on their level of development and understanding. In the same way, you have to think about what you are capable of at this stage of your life. Even if you feel like you should be further ahead, give yourself the grace to be honest about what you can handle.
Do the best you can with what God has placed in your hands at this time. If you show up for your present, you can trust that your future will meet you when you get there. Just do the work to prepare, one step at a time.
Address your pain points.
As you begin to slow down and listen to your life, your pain points will inform what you should focus on next. Think about it. Is there something causing you a great deal of stress? How can you ease the frustration to make life better for yourself and those in your circle?
It could be as simple as organizing your pantry to avoid overspending at the grocery store. It could be as thoughtful as stepping up to host family gatherings because you’re tired of only seeing loved ones on holidays. Whatever the case may be, zero in on the things you can make better and over time you will have made a positive mark in your world.
You can build a life you love and a life that helps others, even at a slower pace.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so eloquently put it, “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
Let the Father order your steps. Trust me, you’ll end up where you are meant to be.
