Do you struggle with overpacking when traveling? Do you often find yourself overburdened with heavy luggage full of things you never actually use? Whether on a trip for pleasure or in the journey of life, we are all holding onto many things “just in case.” But God designed us to live lightly! We can enjoy life more fully if we are not weighed down by unnecessary baggage.

The first secret to packing light is to take only what we need. Every day, we can think through what is required for the journey ahead, not necessarily everything we desire to access easily. Packing light requires deciding what to keep and what to get rid of. Living lightly allows you to live unhindered. We can pivot swiftly when needed.

Is it time to search for a new job? Is there a person you need to let go of in your life? Are there changes you need to make for your children? If we refuse to pack light, we set ourselves up for damage… Carefully choosing what to bring and what to leave behind allows us to move forward without anything holding us back.

Secondly, as we travel through life, we need to schedule lightly. We should have a general idea of where we want to go and be on guard so that our plans don’t overcomplicate things. We should learn the art of leaving margin for life to surprise us. To do this, we have to accept that we can’t know every single outcome. We have to accept our children and spouses making their own choices and respect their freedom to change.

Think about it: Many gifts in life come from experiences we did not plan. There will be times when life does not meet our expectations, but what if those times are actually being given as a gift? The best advice? Follow Christ wherever He leads, and you will discover how much of an adventure life can be!

Finally, our challenge is to pose lightly. Stop constantly pursuing clarity and simplicity. Resist the urge to care so deeply about what other people think! We don’t have to perfect every pose to the point where we aren’t enjoying the moment. If you have a choice between posing and being present, you will always better off staying in the moment.

Traveling lightly will give you room for the abundant life God has promised you. No matter what you are carrying now, you can change. You can learn how to unpack and retrain your habits. You can examine what you have been bringing with you and decide to leave it behind. When you listen to this episode, you will be better equipped and learn practical ways to:

  • Navigate your plans easily
  • Create space to enjoy life
  • Pivot without pressure

When you make the effort to move through life lightly, your hands will open to receive what God has for you. Abundance is not far – take time to unpack your life, put in it what you need, and leave room for Him.
