Podcast: Play in new window
Has this year left you feeling disappointed and discouraged beyond belief? If you’ve found yourself derailed by disruptions and interruptions while trying to move forward, you are not alone.
Many of us start off the year with the best of intentions, only to find ourselves living in regret after life happens. And while it’s normal to feel defeated by life’s unrelenting blows, we were never meant to stay down after getting knocked down by life.
It may be hard to see it now, but there is usually an upside to the unexpected moments in life. Even the moments that make it difficult to keep going. Time has afforded me a few lessons on getting back up when things didn’t go as planned.
Release the Shame
When you fail to reach the finish line, you can feel like a failure, but that is not your identity. You are so much more than a moment in time, and your setbacks do not define you. Doing so will paralyze you and cause you to doubt your ability to make the most of the time you’ve been given. And what a shame it would be to let an interruption keep you from the promises God has placed on your life.
Reframe Your Story
I know that setbacks come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it comes packaged as a minor inconvenience, while other times it’s packaged as something major like a layoff, a divorce, or the loss of a loved one. A setback can even be something that seems good on the surface, like a move to a new town, but the unexpected nature of it causes you to completely get off track and shift into survival mode. But let me remind you that a disappointment is not the end of your story. You can choose to believe that God is working behind the scenes, even when nothing seems to be working in your favor.
Reset with God
There’s something so beautiful about watching a little child find the courage to get back up after taking an unexpected fall. It represents an opportunity to take one step closer to a goal over time without shame. A chance to start anew is also a chance to present your plans to God and allow His will to be done in your life. As frightening as it can be to release control, it really is about acknowledging that God is in control anyway. Inviting Him into your situation is what will allow you to move forward.
Ways to Recover During Your Reset:
- Write down your feelings about what happened in a journal
- Shift your goals based on the limitations of your season
- Move forward slowly by doing the next logical thing
- Create a rhythm of spending time with God each day
