Podcast: Play in new window
If you are like other women I know, you might be striving, doing, and serving from one activity to the next but never recognizing the signals of burnout your body is giving you. Maybe you’ve been feeling a little hopeless, a bit achy, or a tad unmotivated. You’ve tried slowing down and sleeping more. Maybe you’ve even gone to the doctor only to be told that everything is physically fine even though you are still exhausted. In my conversation with Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, we discuss different kinds of rest and how burnout could be a sign that sleep is not the only kind of rest that you need.
Rest does not just mean sleep. Don’t get me wrong, sleep is a great place to start and many people aren’t getting all the sleep they need! But sleep may not be the rest you are deeply craving. Dr. Dalton-Smith and I talk about how our bodies can be depleted in several different ways, and each area isn’t always restored with sleep alone. This podcast is chock-full of actionable tips and simple tools to help you begin customizing a “rest-and-refuel” plan for your individual situation.
I love that Dr. Dalton-Smith not only shares useful information, but she also shares her own battle with burnout and how she found her way to rest and restoration. She goes beyond general advice and into her own experience, providing ways we can rebuild what’s been torn down in our minds, bodies, and souls. If you are in a season where you are squeezed by responsibilities, Dr. Dalton-Smith shares simple creative ways to make room for rest in your life.
I hope you feel encouraged by this podcast episode and come away with action steps for enjoying the satisfying rest you need. I hope you are reminded that pain testifies to the healing that is possible, the peace that is found when you are functioning out of grace, and the comfort that is available when you allow yourself to grieve because God is faithful to meet you in that process.

This episode & the book “Sacred Rest” was /is for me!!! I’ve been battling overwhelm & exhaustion for quite sometime & have finally come to grips that something has to change but being a wife/mom of 3/engineer getting on average 5 hrs a sleep a nite I didn’t know what I could do tangibly beyond getting more sleep… My results were very interesting I surprisingly scored the best/lowest in physical & spiritual rest & the highest/worst in emotional rest…reading the explanation for emotional rest and reflecting further this is not shocking after all as I have been coming to grasp that I find it difficult to express myself (verbally in social & technical& settings at work..also I know)…I was thinking maybe communication just wasn’t my strong suit…but maybe I need “emotional rest”/resources/tips in this area… definitely God’s intervention…I am sure that goes without just saying regardless the results show me that this is the area I most need to focus on… listening to the podcast & feeling as though my needs were being addressed & given a voice I instantly felt relief & hope! Thankyou God for answering prayer! Thankyou Chrystal for consistently providing resources that have ministered to me over the years!! Thank you Dr.Saundra for being an amazing Christian Dr and for the books & resources XOXOXO
