Podcast: Play in new window
What goes into the making of a home?
There is a “need” for home and that feeling of belonging to a home.
Home is who God is in a very tangible way.
But how do you create it?
Today I’m talking with mother and daughter duo Sally and Sarah Clarkson who have teamed up to write the book “The Lifegiving Home“.
Home isn’t necessarily one physical house that you stay in for a long time but more a certain identity and culture that you carry with you wherever you go.
Sally and Sarah share with us today that even though their family has moved many times there has always been a balance between rhythm, routine and play that went with them. Today they share encouragement and practical tips on how you can create that same atmosphere within your family home.
Let’s Talk!
After you’ve listened to the podcast, I’d love to continue the conversation. Be sure and leave a comment or ask a question!
- What does being “home” mean to you?
- How do you create an environment and atmosphere that is safe within in your home for your family?

Highlights from Today’s Episode:

Yah! I just checked again yesterday to see if there was a new podcast waiting yet. This makes my day! Thanks for starting back again.
Our home atmosphere is am often overlooked subject. I think it’s so important to realize it all starts with living it out at home & having a welcoming haven to show others love & build relationships that can witness of God’s love.
Wonderful to be with you in this space, my sweet friend. So honored and also always fun. Can’t wait to see you in Cali.

What a great topic. I think home is that place where you are always welcomed with love. Not only for the immediate family, but friends and other loved ones. Even though I’m not exactly a gourmet cook, I love to welcome family with a home cooked meal.
Worth the wait. Thank you all. As my wife told me years ago, home is where the heart is. That’s part of what I’m hearing from everyone in this conversation, whose backgrounds are either fixed or transient like mine. Unlike mine, both histories present are “steady.” I’m happy you guys have that reference to share with us, this whole business of “creating margin or space”. I’m now remembering a church I attended for a few years. That atmospheric is the the best memory I have so far of the space and margin to which you refer. Thanks again.
I love to create spaces that allow me to rest and breathe. I find that neutrals and green plants do that for me!
I do need this book. My house sure needs to be a home and I desire that with all my might but busyness and work have a way of stealing time and you are caught in a race. 2016 is the year that I PURPOSE to make my house a home starting with family dinner time without someone saying ‘is someone coming over’
I was happy to get the email about the podcast -welcome back grandma (just scratch the last word).
Myriam! You Won! Look for an email from me soon!
Awesome! Was just Chevrolet see if I won and I did. Can’t wait to get the book. Thanks Chrystal

Home to me is a safe haven for my family to retreat to after being faced with the uncertainties of the world. I love having dinner around the table, but we also love to picnic on the living room floor. We also have weekly (a lot of times more than that) game night. I feel like I set the tone for my home, so if home for me is a safe haven then I need to set a peaceful tone for my family to follow after.
Embrace being Gram! Have so much fun! Congrats! Thanks for this wonderful, informative podcast!
I love your interview with Sally & Sarah. I make my house a home by continuing to create, little by little, a calm & welcoming environment. Decluttering, adding simple beauty, smiling, music, and chocolate chip cookies help a lot, too! I’d love to get the book, Lifegiving Home.
I’ve been inspired to make my house a home that reflects our faith and values ever since I read your book, Kingdom Woman. The part about how your mom would intentionally choose decor that exemplified your faith and family values really spoke to me, and I’ve been following her example ever since! I love that visitors to our home cannot help but know exactly where we stand when they enter our home. That, and filling my home with items that bring comfort and happiness to both my husband and me are how I make my house a home!
I would love to read this book! I love Sally Clarkson’s vision for motherhood and how she shares it. I feel lately like i am doing everything wrong!
I try to daily affirm my children, and also make traditions that they will be able to treasure and carry into their own homes (birthdays, holidays, etc).
I loved the podcast! Sally and Sarah’s message is so encouraging to me!
We spend every night at the supper table (except my husband if he has meetings/class). For the most part 7 days a week we have supper together. Our home is comfortable and it may not always be cleaned up …toys are out, dirty dishes in the sink, laundry but we spend time together as a family. Prayers, loving one another, talking, Bibles are out to read, devotions, family pictures, books, etc…Teaching our son…
Tradition is huge for me and my family. We have traditions for so many reasons.
Congratulations on your new grandbaby- and welcome back! I feel its very important for a woman to have a mentor/ mentors in her life that she respects and looks up to for advice and support. As Ive grown to accept the challenges that I cant do it alone, its ok to seek advice from those who have a positive impact on shaping our experiences for a better outcome. I embrace and appreciate your views and thankful that you address many topics that help us grow as women of God.
I’m so blessed by this message and can’t wait to read the book. Every Saturday night is family night in our home. I love Sally’s message of creating a home and family culture that our kids want to come back home too.
