Podcast: Play in new window
Have you been giving your power away? When you want nothing more than to change your situation, it’s often easier to wait for the right person or the right set of circumstances to come along and make it all better. But what if the thing you’re waiting on never comes? What if the help you’re looking for comes in the form of taking ownership and having agency over your own life?
You Get to Choose
Agency is all about activating your ability to make choices. And even though you may not have chosen the divorce, the job loss, the lack of finances, or the disrespect from your spouse or your children, what you choose to do when life really gets to life’ing is totally up to you.
Three Steps for Activating Agency
When you feel limited by life, it can feel like nothing will get better unless someone comes in to rescue you from your worries, but there is always something you can do. And while you can’t control the outcome of the situation, these steps can help you begin to see positive change in your life.
-
- Tell yourself the truth about your situation. – Running from what’s happening in your life will not help things get better. Do you take the time to nurture your relationships? How have you been spending your money? Before you can take ownership of your life, you have to face the reality of your situation.
- Draw a line between what is yours to own and what is someone else’s responsibility. – True agency requires you to be clear about what you will take action on and what lies in the hands of someone else. Setting boundaries around what you will and won’t do moving forward will save you a great deal of stress in the long run.
- Take one small step in the right direction. – Identify one thing that you can do to directly address a frustration in your life.
Release the Need to Blame Yourself and Other People
Sometimes it’s hard to forgive yourself for a poor decision or past mistake, but blaming yourself gets you nowhere. It only weighs you down and causes you to live in a depressed state. And even when it’s easier to place blame on someone else, it simply doesn’t serve you to stay stuck in that place. Maybe you didn’t cause the demise of your relationship. Maybe you didn’t deserve to be let go from your job. Maybe someone you trusted tried to gaslight you into believing something was your fault when it wasn’t. But if you choose to be bound by the decisions of other people, you’ll begin to believe that you are powerless and forfeit the chance to live your life.
This episode of the podcast will empower you to take ownership of the things that are your responsibility, release the things that are not, and do one thing that will shift your life in the right direction. Don’t let the weight of it all discourage you. You have the power to choose better for your life.
