One of the biggest challenges with setting goals isn’t getting started. It’s staying consistent after the excitement wears off.
We’ve all experienced it. We begin with good intentions, full of motivation and hope, only to find ourselves pulled in a dozen different directions by the demands of everyday life. Before long, the days feel like they’re flying by, our to-do lists keep growing, and the things that mattered most to us slowly slip to the bottom of the list.
If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “There just isn’t enough time in the day,” you’re not alone. We’ve all been there. But here’s the encouraging news: while we can’t create more hours in the day, we can learn to become better stewards of the time we’ve been given. With a little intentionality, it’s possible to protect your priorities, create margin for what matters most, and make the most of every day.
If you want to feel satisfied with how you use your time, consider these four steps toward maximizing your time:
1. Acknowledge what time will actually allow.
We’ve all been there—thinking we can squeeze more into a day than the hours will allow. Maybe you find yourself tidying up just a bit before you head out, only to arrive late (that’s usually me :). Or perhaps you feel compelled to finish a conversation, even though it’s making you late for something else (also me!). Or maybe it’s that “quick stop” that turns into an unexpectedly long detour.
Start being realistic about your time. Before you dive into a task, pause and ask yourself, “What can I truly accomplish in the time I have?” Setting boundaries around these small distractions can prevent the domino effect of running behind.
2. Become aware of what’s stealing your time.
Even with the best intentions, stress can creep in if we aren’t mindful of what drains our time. If you’re constantly feeling overwhelmed, it’s important to take a closer look at your habits and routines. Are you losing precious minutes scrolling on your phone? Taking too long to get ready? Or maybe continuing the conversation that you should really end?
Do a “time audit”—write down how you spend your day for a week and identify the time stealers. Once you spot them, be intentional about cutting them out. Whether it’s reducing screen time (try “One Sec” or “The Opal App”)!, preparing for your day the night before, or setting limits on conversations, make the conscious choice to reclaim your time.
3. Stay focused on what needs your attention right now.
Being a good steward of your time means prioritizing what matters most. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in tasks and distractions. But true time management isn’t just about checking things off—it’s about being present and connected with what’s in front of you.
Pay attention to YOUR life. This is one of the main reasons that I created The Full Circle planner. I understand what it is to run through your days and not actually be sure about how YOU are doing. When you are caring for yourself, you can also better give solid attention to others.
Focus on each moment. When speaking to someone, look them in the eye and really listen. When you’re with family, engage fully in their stories, even if they’re long (breathe deep and listen!). Being present in these moments shows you value what truly matters, and it helps you avoid feeling like time is slipping away.
4. Ask God how He wants you to use your time.
Many of us question whether we’re using our time in alignment with God’s purpose. We wonder if it’s too late to fulfill His calling in our lives. But the key to maximizing your time isn’t just about managing it well—it’s about surrendering it to God.
Begin each day with a prayer, asking God to guide your time. Surrender your plans and ask Him to order your day according to His purpose. This simple act of surrender makes a world of difference in how you approach time—and ensures that your priorities align with His will for you today.
These steps aren’t about rigid time management—they’re about making intentional decisions, reclaiming your time, and being present in each moment. By focusing on what truly matters, cutting out time stealers, and aligning your day with God’s purpose, you’ll not only maximize your time—you’ll find peace in how you spend it.
So, do any of these four strategies to maximize your time resonate with you? I hope they do, because I want you to stop feeling like your precious time is slipping away. Take charge of your hours, and make this the year you finally feel in control.
If you’re ready to dive deeper, I’ve shared more of my thoughts on maximizing your time in the podcast episode below.
