When I sat down with Brenda Palmer last year at The Sister Circle Live, I knew I wanted to talk to her about obedience. After all, she wrote a book called The Journey of Yes.  Most of us like the idea of obedience. We love hearing stories about people who stepped out in faith, trusted God, and ended up exactly where they were supposed to be. We love the testimony after the fact. What we don’t always talk about is what happens in the middle.

What happens when saying yes costs you something? What happens when obedience is misunderstood? What happens when it feels lonely? What happens when the thing God is asking of you requires you to let go of something you weren’t quite ready to surrender?

One of the things that stood out to me most was Brenda’s reminder that God is often preparing us long before we realize it. Looking back, she could see how seemingly unrelated experiences were actually equipping her for what God would eventually call her to do.

I wonder how many things in our own lives are like that. How many experiences, disappointments, relationships, or seasons of waiting feel random right now but are actually serving a purpose we can’t yet see?

Our conversation also touched on something many of us know all too well: the disappointment that comes when obedience isn’t understood by others.

Most of us want more than God’s approval. We want affirmation from the people we love and respect. We want to know that others understand why we’re making the decisions we’re making. But sometimes following God’s leading means moving forward without the encouragement or validation we hoped would come. That doesn’t make obedience easy, but it does force us to wrestle with an important question: Whose voice carries the most weight in our lives?

One of the gifts of walking with God is learning to trust that He wastes nothing. Even when we don’t understand what He’s doing, He is often doing more than we realize.

In this episode, Brenda and I also talk about:

  • Why obedience often requires trust before clarity
  • What to do when God’s leading isn’t understood by the people around you
  • How God uses unexpected seasons to prepare us for what’s next

What I walked away with most, however, was the reminder that there is always another yes. No matter how long we’ve been walking with God, there is always another invitation to trust Him more deeply.

If you’ve ever wrestled with a difficult decision, wondered whether you can trust God’s leading, or found yourself standing between what feels comfortable and what God is asking you to do, I think this conversation will encourage you.

I hope you’ll take some time to listen to the full episode.
