Twelve minutes a day. That’s all you need in order to read the entire Bible in one year. So why is it so important to commit to reading God’s word consistently?

After all, connecting with God through Scripture is how intimacy with God is formed. Much like learning about a loved one through intentional time and attention, you learn more about the character of God through time spent in His word. The thing is, even in knowing this, studying Scripture can still feel like an impossible task.If you feel challenged in reading God’s Word, you aren’t alone. And you might feel this way for a myriad of reasons.

Maybe it’s difficult for you to find the stories in the Bible interesting or applicable to your life. Maybe reading, in general, isn’t your favorite way to spend your time. And maybe you just don’t have the time or mental capacity to comprehend all 66 books in the Bible.

Whatever the case, if you struggle to read the Word, then you may have felt guilt or shame about that. But allow this message to free you from those feelings: you’re always right on time to read God’s word.

Tara-Leigh Cobble reminded me of this truth during our conversation on the latest episode of The Sister Circle Podcast. Tara-Leigh is a speaker and teacher who has reached millions of listeners with The Bible Recap Podcast. She is committed to making the Bible accessible and digestible through her podcast, discipleship groups (D-Group International), books, and resources.

As someone who’s been in Christian spaces for most of her life, Tara-Leigh knows what it’s like to come from a Christian background and still struggle to tap into Scripture. But when you know something has the power to change your life for the better, you have to find ways to make the time and space for it.

Sometimes, you simply have to adjust your approach to have a better experience. Perhaps a different version of the Bible will help you if you find the words on the pages hard to comprehend. Also, download a Bible app like YouVersion to play verses out loud instead of trying to read them yourself.

Of course, there are countless Bible reading plans, studies, commentaries, and expert Bible teachers out there to break down the Word in a way that you can understand.

You just have to be willing to engage with Scripture, even when life dares to get in the way.

One of my favorite parts of my chat with Tara-Leigh was learning more about the role of discipleship and community when seeking out God’s word. And you know I certainly believe that we are better together. A goal as great as reading the Bible can feel more achievable when you don’t go at it alone.

Hearing how God has made Himself real in other people’s lives can transform the way you see Him at work in your life. And of course, there’s nothing like the level of accountability found in a group of other believers to encourage you to keep seeking after His word.

If you fall off track with your Scripture reading goals, don’t let that discourage you. It’s not about perfection, it’s about building a relationship with God.

So get started, my friend. The best relationship you could ever have is simply waiting for you to engage and get going.

Read the Word.

It will change your life.
