Podcast: Play in new window
If there is anyone who cringes at the thought of change, it would be me. Of course, I realize life requires change therefore, we shouldn’t be surprised when change comes; however, doubling down and deciding to do what needs to be done doesn’t always fit within the confines of my plans. Put simply, the shifting circumstances in life are not always ideal.
Is it just me???
Or are life shifts really hard?
Much of life is learning to recalibrate. Yet, in a culture consumed with productivity and the promotion of personal agendas, paying attention to what matters most doesn’t always take priority.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good checklist and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with making progress towards my goals, but if I’m not careful, it becomes easy for me to live reluctant and avoidant of interruptions that may occur; I don’t want life to catch me by surprise.
At best, many of us power through life, hoping that what we choose to ignore doesn’t somehow catch up with us — having difficult conversations, creating space to be healthy and whole, or doing the very thing we have continuously put off for a better time.
Recalibration is a beautiful tool to use in living your life well even if it sometimes feels like a “necessary evil.”
Recalibrating often feels like traversing through rough terrain. It requires you to slow down and make necessary adjustments in order to move forward in the direction God is leading you. It can be challenging and uncomfortable, but when done correctly, engaging with necessary shifts can give you clarity about what can actually be healthy and having opportunities in your life.
That being said…
When was the last time you took the temperature of your life?
Imagine the possibilities that await you if you choose to slow down enough to pay attention to your life. Imagine what you might notice if every now and again you take the long way home (instead of taking the shortcut). Think of the invitation to amazing revelations you would have if you allow God to speak to you in the quiet. Consider what great grace would accompany His gentle nudge, guiding you in a new direction.
What if you had that hard conversation with your spouse? Or, decided to go to counseling? Instead of waiting it out, consider what God may want to do right now. What if journaling revealed the best of what is to come in your life by allowing you to see clearly the reality of what is?
Although many of us wouldn’t naturally choose to adopt recalibration as a part of the natural rhythm of our lives, it’s important to note that the best of life can only be experienced when carefully examined and adjusted. It’s never too late to decide to weed out what no longer fits.
Choose to engage with your life despite the shifts, interruptions, and the unexpected.
Why?
Because that, my friend, is living.
