Podcast: Play in new window
Is there such a thing as a perfect community? How do you find and surround yourself with the right people? How do you navigate the reality of humanity as you seek to do life with others?
Here’s the truth – We weren’t meant to journey through life alone. Community is essential. This means that both you and I must be intentional about finding our people. If you’ve made a valiant attempt to find your people in the past and it didn’t work out, you don’t have to let those experiences define your future efforts.
The reality is that navigating relationships is complex, and therefore, building communities can require effort. I know that you have had your fair share of unmet expectations and disappointments and, if you are like me, you may have thought that things would be so much easier if you just stopped aiming for connection altogether. If a person offends us, then calling it quits is tempting. This hard landscape of building community doesn’t even include other realities of life. We move. People change—seasons of life ebb and flow. So finding community can easily become lost on us. When this happens, what do we do?
Jennie Allen has done the work to help us understand how to create community and shares her story and the lessons she has learned in her book, Find Your People. Have you ever wondered how to find your people? Are you hungry for community? Do you need help making connections that stick?
The need for community is a real need. It’s actually baked into your design. God wired you for community. When the Bible says, “…Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. … Male and female created He them” (Genesis 1:26), that includes you! You are made in God’s image, and God is a communal being. If you desire community, you are craving something that God designed you for. In the current climate of our world today, the desire for community is ever increasing as forced isolation makes us come to grips with just how important connection is in how we function in life. If you are feeling the need for community now more than ever, that’s because you should be.
But still, you and I are left to address the connection issue. Not sure how to make connections in your life? Start right where you are— your neighborhood, church, work – your actually real-life community that is in fairly near proximity. Find people devoted to living well and who are also passionately pursuing God and all that He has for them. Whether it’s singleness, marriage, raising children, serving the community, or excelling in your professional career, we’re called to walk alongside one another. You can do it. We can help. My conversation with Jennie Allen will be just the thing to help you on your journey to being known and knowing others in a way that brings meaningful connection in your life.
