Podcast: Play in new window
Let’s talk about your gut! It gets a bad rap and it’s certainly not glamorous, but the gut is the engine for the whole body. Your microbiome lives in your gut and is a collection of trillions of organisms that play a vital role in your body’s health and how you feel every day. There is a sense of privacy surrounding gut health and (whisper loudly) stool, so it might feel weird or icky to talk about. But if your gut isn’t right, it will affect how you can protect yourself from infection and disease.
A while back, I discovered Dr. Robynne Chutkan on YouTube and subsequently watched her Ted Talk and read one of her books. I have been grateful to learn more about gut health from her teaching and it’s my delight to introduce her to you on the podcast.
In this episode, Dr. Robynne Chutkan and I talk about the importance of gut health and what steps you can take today to help you feel better tomorrow. Dr. Robynne has both professional experience and a personal passion for this topic. For the first two years of her life, Dr. Robynne’s daughter was constantly in and out of doctor’s offices and struggled to stay healthy. That’s when Dr. Robynne decided to take charge of her family’s health, research the problems her daughter was having, and where she learned about the need to advocate for the gut.
Like Dr. Robynne, you can be the architect of your own health. She recommends talking to your doctor and listening to modern medicine while also doing the work to understand what’s going on inside your body. Living a life you love means taking care of your whole self, including your physical body. So, what steps can you take today to help you love tomorrow?
Dr. Robynne encourages us to consider what we eat, but don’t worry–you don’t have to cut a bunch of things out or become a gluten-free vegan! One of Dr. Robynne’s biggest pieces of advice? It’s simple! Breathe fresh air, sweat as a method of detoxifying, and eat vegetables that your gut thrives on.
Taking charge of your health may feel like a daunting task, but Dr. Robynne says it’s not too late and you really can start today. Go for a ten minute walk outside. Eat a salad with your normal dinner. Experiment with a green smoothie. You are worth the investment in your health, and your body will thank you for it tomorrow. You can choose to live a life you love by creating small habits that are good for your gut.

Thank you so much for this. I’ve been and I’m still struggling with gut issues, so this was a timely message. I’m currently undergoing a full GI consultation starting with a gastric emptying study because it seems it’s hard for my food to process and my stomach to empty. It’s been a lot, to say the least. My prayer is that all of this is resolved soon.
Hi Tonja!
Sending prayers your way as you navigate through this season!
